When I first arrived in Spain, I often heard about the slow pace of life and long queues for doctor’s appointments, so I subconsciously assumed that Spanish medical technology was probably nothing special. However, after frequently visiting hospitals with a family member who wasn’t well, I realized I was completely wrong. My perception, especially regarding medical tech, has been totally upended.
What impressed me the most were the surgical robots. For a minor procedure my family member needed, the doctor mentioned using the da Vinci surgical robot. I was taken aback at first, thinking it was something incredibly futuristic, but I later learned that it’s quite common in larger public and private hospitals in Spain. The benefits are smaller incisions, faster recovery, and more precise operations for the surgeon, as it can filter out minor hand tremors. Although we didn’t end up using it for their specific condition, just knowing it was an option was very reassuring.

Beyond the high-end surgical equipment, some more practical tech applications are also widespread. For example, telemedicine has developed rapidly since the pandemic. Now, many follow-up appointments with family doctors or specialists can be done via video call. I once helped my elderly neighbor schedule one; she could discuss her condition with the doctor, get an electronic prescription, and then pick up the medicine from the pharmacy, all through a mobile app. It saves the trouble of traveling back and forth, which is a real blessing for people with mobility issues.
I also did some research and found that Spain is at the forefront in several cutting-edge medical technology fields. For instance, in cancer treatment, it was one of the first countries in Europe to introduce proton therapy. This technology can target tumors more precisely, causing less damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Although there aren’t many facilities yet, several centers have already been built. Here are a few well-known areas of medical technology application in Spain that I’ve compiled:
| Technology Area | Main Application | Availability in Spain |
| Surgical Robots | Minimally invasive surgery | Available in major large hospitals |
| Telemedicine | Follow-ups, consultations, e-prescriptions | Widespread, supported by public and private systems |
| Proton Therapy | Precise cancer radiotherapy | Available at a few top cancer centers |
| Gene Sequencing | Genetic disease diagnosis, personalized medicine | Increasingly used in specific specialties |
That’s not to say it’s perfect. The waiting times for appointments in the public system are still a long-standing issue, and that’s unlikely to be resolved in the short term. But looking solely at the level of technology and the advancement of equipment, Spain’s medical capabilities are truly underestimated.
