When I first moved to Barcelona, the top priority was to sort out health insurance for my whole family. It’s not just a must-have for residency renewal, but also for peace of mind for myself and my loved ones. Initially, I was ambitious and planned to research the major insurance companies like Adeslas, Sanitas, and DKV myself. But after browsing their websites and seeing all the different plans, co-pago (co-payments), and carencia (waiting periods)… I was completely confused. It felt like I knew each word, but together they were like a foreign language to me.
Later, a neighbor mentioned they went through an insurance agent. I was hesitant at first, always wondering if there was a catch with agents, or if they would be particularly expensive. But researching on my own was just too draining, so I decided to give it a try and contacted one. The experience turned out to be surprisingly good! The agent was very patient, first asking detailed questions about our family’s situation, such as age, any pre-existing medical conditions, budget, dental needs, and so on. Then, he directly provided a side-by-side comparison of products from three major insurance companies, with the pros and cons laid out clearly.

Agent vs. DIY: How to Choose?
Actually, both options have their pros and cons. I’ve summarized my thoughts to give you a reference:
| Comparison | Through an Insurance Agent | Directly with the Insurance Company |
| Convenience | High. Saves time and effort; the agent handles most of the paperwork for you. | Low. You need to research policies, contact customer service, and fill out various forms yourself. |
| Professionalism | High. Agents usually know products from multiple companies and can offer side-by-side comparisons and advice. | Medium. You only learn about one company’s products, so the information is one-sided. You don’t get the broader perspective that Spanish health insurance agents can provide. |
| Price | Mostly the same. The agent’s commission is paid by the insurance company, so the premium is usually the same as on the official website, and sometimes they even have internal discounts. | The price is transparent, but you might miss out on special offers available through agents. |
| After-sales Service | High. If you have issues with claims, appointments, etc., the agent can act as an intermediary to help you communicate. | Medium. You have to call customer service yourself, and sometimes the wait times can be long. |
| Disadvantages | You need to spend time finding a reliable agent. | It consumes a lot of time and energy, and it’s easy to get confused by complex policy terms. |
How to Find a Reliable Agent?
This is probably the question everyone is most concerned about. I think there are a few points to keep in mind:
- Check credentials and authorization: A professional agent will definitely represent more than one company. You can ask them directly which companies they are an agent for and if they have official authorization.
- Evaluate the communication: Are they really listening to your needs, or just pushing the most expensive product? A good agent will get to know you first and then recommend a plan, not the other way around.
- Ask for recommendations: Word-of-mouth is invaluable. Ask friends who have already bought insurance if they can recommend an agent. I found mine through a neighbor’s recommendation, and it worked out great.
- Be wary of “all-inclusive” claims: If someone tells you “this insurance covers everything, with no restrictions,” it’s a major red flag. Every insurance policy has its limitations and exclusions, and a responsible agent will explain these to you clearly.
From my personal experience, buying health insurance in Spain through an agency is a very efficient and hassle-free option, especially for new immigrants like us whose language skills aren’t perfect yet and who aren’t familiar with the local market. Of course, the key is to find a professional and responsible agent. I hope my experience can help those of you who are currently struggling with this! Feel free to share your own insurance experiences as well!
