For the past couple of days, rumors have been flying around on social media and in group chats about mandatory masks returning to Spanish hospitals. I thought we had traveled back two years… After checking the news, it turns out it’s not just a rumor—it’s real! The Ministry of Health has officially issued a notice. Due to the recent surge in cases of the flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and to protect everyone, especially vulnerable individuals, starting from January 10, 2024, wearing masks will once again be mandatory in hospitals and health centers nationwide.
This time, the new mask rule for Spanish hospitals is primarily focused on healthcare environments. This means that whether you’re going to a hospital for an appointment or a test, or visiting a community health center to get a prescription or see your family doctor, you must wear a mask. For now, it’s not compulsory in pharmacies, but the Ministry of Health ‘strongly recommends’ wearing one there as well. The high demand and necessity of masks sometimes lead to unfortunate incidents, such as the theft of hospital masks. Honestly, it feels like the viruses are particularly nasty this winter; several of my friends have fallen ill, battling either the flu or a severe cold with a persistent cough.
Actually, even before the Ministry of Health issued the nationwide mandate, a few autonomous communities had already gotten a head start. For example, the Valencian Community, Catalonia, and Aragon had already reinstated the mask mandate in healthcare facilities last week due to high local rates of respiratory illnesses. It seems this nationwide action was an inevitable step. The Minister of Health, Mónica García, also stated that this is a temporary measure, primarily to cope with the winter infection peak, and it will be reassessed once the situation improves.
