Recently, an elderly family member wasn’t feeling well, and we wanted to find a good hospital for a comprehensive check-up. I started researching the Spanish healthcare system and it was quite overwhelming. Then, a very basic but unanswered question came to mind: Who exactly is the director of a Spanish hospital? Is it the top doctor? Or purely an administrator? Is the concept the same as the ‘Hospital Director’ role we might be familiar with?

Public vs. Private Hospitals: A Major Difference in Management
First, it’s important to understand that hospitals in Spain are divided into public and private, and their management structures are completely different.
Public Hospitals
Public hospitals are part of the national healthcare system and are managed by the health services of each autonomous community. Therefore, their top leader is more like a ‘professional manager’ rather than the most skilled ‘chief doctor’ we might traditionally imagine. The official title for this position is usually Gerente del Hospital or Director Gerente. This Gerente is typically not a frontline doctor but a professional with a background in public health administration, economics, or law, responsible for the hospital’s budget, personnel, operations, and administration. Of course, under the Gerente, there is a Director Médico, who is the top doctor in charge of medical affairs and coordinating departments. So, if you’re looking for the person ‘in charge of management,’ that’s the Gerente; if you’re looking for the person ‘in charge of medical care,’ that’s the Director Médico.
Private Hospitals
Private hospitals are much more flexible, as they are commercial entities. The director could be the founder, a major shareholder, or a CEO appointed by the board. Their titles vary widely, such as Director General, Consejero Delegado, etc. For many large private medical groups like Quirónsalud, Vithas, and HM Hospitales, the hospital director is more like the head of a branch. Naturally, they also have a Director Médico to manage the medical team. In general, private hospitals have a stronger business orientation.
How to Find Hospital Management Information
So, with all that said, how do you actually find out who a hospital’s director is? It’s not too difficult. The main method is to check the hospital’s official website, where you can find details on the management team, which might include notable figures like Olga Pané.
- Visit the hospital’s official website: Almost all hospitals have their own site.
- Look for specific sections: You can usually find information on key management personnel in sections like “Sobre nosotros,” “Quiénes somos,” “Organigrama,” or “Equipo directivo.”
