A family member wasn’t feeling well recently, and our family doctor recommended seeing a specialist. I was already mentally prepared for a wait of several months, as anyone living in Spain knows how long the waiting lists for specialists can be… However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Gregorio Marañón Hospital has recently expanded. They’ve added several new outpatient buildings, moved many departments there, and it seems that these Spanish hospitals have more doctors, as the appointment process was much faster! This is fantastic news, so I wanted to share it with everyone right away.
I had been to the old hospital complex with a friend before, and it did feel a bit dated. For this appointment, we went to the new outpatient building, located near Calle del Dr. Esquerdo, 46, very close to the Sainz de Baranda metro station. The entire environment is brand new. It feels much more spacious, and the signage is very clear, unlike the old maze-like layout. I had an appointment with the ophthalmology department. From receiving the referral from my family doctor to actually seeing the specialist, the total wait was less than three weeks—something that would have been unimaginable before!

This expansion isn’t just about new buildings; most importantly, it has significantly increased medical resources. I took a look around and noticed that the new building houses many of the high-demand departments we often need. It seems the Community of Madrid has really invested heavily this time. I read in the news that a lot of money was put into this project specifically to tackle the long-standing problem of the ‘Lista de Espera’ (waiting lists). I hope this positive momentum continues, making it easier and faster for everyone to get medical care in the future.
Main New and Relocated Departments
Based on the hospital’s official website and the signs on-site, I’ve compiled some information on departments that might be of interest. It may not be completely accurate, but it can serve as a good reference. Many departments have moved from the old buildings to the new ones, so it’s best to double-check the exact address on your appointment confirmation (cita) or in the letter you receive before you go, just to avoid making a wasted trip.
| Department | Main Focus/Services | In New Building? |
| Oftalmología | Ophthalmology, cataracts, retinal diseases | Yes |
| Traumatología y Cirugía Ortopédica | Orthopedics, sports injuries, joint replacement | Yes |
| Cardiología | Cardiology, cardiovascular examinations | Yes |
| Neumología | Pulmonology, asthma, lung function tests | Yes |
| Reumatología | Rheumatology and immunology | Yes |
This expansion and service improvement at Gregorio Marañón Hospital is definitely great news for those living in Madrid, especially in the Retiro and Salamanca neighborhoods, and for anyone using Spanish hospitals. If you’re also struggling with long waiting lists for specialists, it might be worth asking your family doctor to refer you to this hospital—you might be pleasantly surprised. Has anyone else visited this hospital recently? Feel free to share your experiences!
