Hey everyone! I’m new to the forum and have seen some people asking about good universities in Spain beyond Madrid and Barcelona. Since some have asked about the University of Toledo, Spain, I’d like to talk about my alma mater—the University of Castilla-La Mancha, located in the ancient capital, Toledo. Hopefully, this can help students who are currently deciding on a university.
First, a quick clarification: what people often call the ‘University of Toledo’ is actually one of the most important campuses of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM). UCLM is a public university with campuses spread across several cities in the region. The best part about the Toledo campus is that the entire city feels like your campus! Walking to class every day through a UNESCO World Heritage site is a truly magical feeling, almost like you’ve stepped back in time.
Campus and Environment
The Toledo campus has two main parts. One is the Faculty of Humanities, located on the hilltop of the old town with its charming, historic architecture. The other is the incredibly cool Fábrica de Armas (Royal Arms Factory) campus, a renovated ancient weapons factory located by the Tagus River. The blend of modern academic buildings with the old factory structures is visually stunning. Most of my classes were here. Here’s a picture to give you a feel for it:

This campus has fantastic green spaces, is very spacious, and even has its own stadium and indoor swimming pool. The facilities are very comprehensive.
Academics and Cost of Living
In terms of academics, UCLM is well-known for programs like Translation, Humanities, and Sports Science. Studying history or art in such an ancient city is an experience where the ambiance is simply unbeatable. Since the campus locations are quite spread out, classes for different majors are held in different places, so pay attention to this when you apply. I’ve put together a simple table for your reference:
| Popular Fields of Study | Main Campus Location |
| Humanities & Translation | Casco Histórico (Old Town) |
| Law & Social Sciences | Fábrica de Armas |
| Sports Science | Fábrica de Armas |
| Architecture & Engineering | Fábrica de Armas |
Finally, let’s talk about daily life. Toledo’s biggest advantage is its relatively low cost of living, especially rent, which is significantly cheaper than in Madrid. You can find a nice single room for around 300 euros a month. It’s not a big city, so you can get around mostly on foot or by bus. A potential downside of the university in the ancient city of Toledo is that there’s less entertainment than in a major city. However, if you’re looking for some excitement on the weekends, Madrid is just a half-hour high-speed train ride away, which is very convenient. Overall, if you appreciate a quiet learning environment steeped in history, Toledo is an absolute hidden gem. You definitely won’t regret it. Feel free to join the discussion!
