The weather has been fluctuating lately, and I unfortunately caught something. My throat was so sore I had to make a doctor’s appointment and go to the hospital. When I got there, I noticed that although it’s not mandatory like it was a few years ago, many people in the waiting area were still voluntarily wearing masks. After all, hospitals are full of germs, so it’s about protecting yourself and others.
I had just run out of masks, so I bought a box from the pharmacy next to the hospital. That’s when I discovered that there are several types of medical masks in Spain, with significant differences in price and protection levels. This made me want to write a post to discuss it, much like the one about [Spanish medical check-ups], to help others know what to choose when they need one.

Mask Types and How to Choose
Generally, there are two main types you’ll find in pharmacies:
1. Standard Surgical Masks
These are the common, thin blue or white masks we see everywhere. Their main purpose is to prevent your own respiratory droplets from spreading, which primarily protects others. If you just have a common cold, or you’re visiting a clinic for a routine check-up that you might book through a hospital appointment app, this type is sufficient. The pros are that they are cheap, breathable, and comfortable. The downside is their lower protection level, as they don’t effectively filter inhaled viral particles.
2. FFP2 Masks
This is the molded, cup-shaped mask, similar to what some might know as an N95. It offers a higher level of protection. Not only does it prevent droplets from spreading outwards, but more importantly, it can effectively filter at least 94% of airborne particles, providing excellent protection for yourself against infection. If you’re going to a hospital or entering any high-risk enclosed environment, this type is highly recommended. They are more expensive than standard surgical masks and can feel a bit stuffy when worn for long periods due to their thickness.
To help you compare, I’ve put together a simple table. For more specific healthcare experiences, you can also read about [Spanish dermatology clinics]:
| Mask Type | Main Function | Applicable Scenarios | Price Reference |
| Surgical Mask | Protecting oneself Prevents spreading droplets to others | Daily protection, common cold | €2-€4 |
| FFP2 Mask | Two-way protection, protects self and others | Hospitals, high-risk areas | €5-€8 |
If you’re sick and going to see a doctor, wearing an FFP2 mask is the safest choice to avoid infecting others and to prevent cross-contamination at the hospital. For everyday preventive use, a standard surgical mask is sufficient. I hope everyone stays healthy and never needs to use any of these!
