I’ve finally decided to get my teeth straightened here in Spain—a classic case of procrastination! I’d been thinking about it for a while back in my home country but never got around to it. Now that I’m here and plan to stay for a few years, it just makes sense to get it done. Before making a final decision, though, I spent weeks researching prices and visiting several clinics for consultations, and I found the whole process quite complex. So today, I’m starting this thread to share everything I’ve learned about getting braces in Spain. I’d love for others to add their experiences and join the discussion!
The Big Price Reveal: How Much Do Different Types of Braces Cost?
First things first, the cost of orthodontic treatment in Spain varies a lot from person to person. It depends on the complexity of your case, the clinic you choose, your city, and the type of braces. I mainly consulted with clinics in Madrid and also asked a friend in Barcelona, and here’s a summary of the general price range I found.
Types of Braces and Approximate Budgets
I’ve organized the three most common types of braces and their approximate costs into a table for easy comparison.
| Type of Braces | Pros | Cons | Total Budget Range |
| Traditional Metal Braces | Lowest cost, mature technology, highly effective | Ugly, not very aesthetic, can cause mouth sores | 2,500 - 4,500 |
| Ceramic Braces | More aesthetic than metal, less noticeable from a distance | Slightly more expensive; the brackets can get stained—a detail to note for orthodontics in Spain. | 3,500 - 5,500 |
| Invisalign (Clear Aligners) | Virtually invisible, removable, comfortable | Highest cost, requires a high level of self-discipline | 4,000 - 7,000+ |
This price is usually a “package deal” that includes the initial consultation, X-rays, treatment plan, the braces themselves, all follow-up adjustment appointments, and the final retainers. However, make sure to ask for clarification before signing any contract, as some clinics’ quotes might not include retainers or extra costs like tooth extractions!

How to Choose a Clinic? Public or Private?
Spain’s public healthcare system generally doesn’t cover orthodontics for adults, except in very specific cases. Therefore, most of us will need to go to a private clinic. Private options are divided into large dental chains, like Vitaldent or Sanitas Dental, and smaller private practices run by individual dentists. The chains might seem to have more transparent pricing and often run promotions for installment payments, but sometimes the experience can feel a bit like an assembly line. Private practices, on the other hand, tend to be more focused on the dentist’s individual skill and reputation, offering a more personalized experience. My advice is, don’t be afraid to put in the effort. Get a free initial consultation from two or three different types of clinics, listen to the various treatment plans and quotes, and then compare them yourself.
Finally, getting braces is a significant investment. Besides the price of orthodontics in Spain, the dentist’s skill and your ability to communicate well with them are incredibly important. Many clinics offer interest-free financing, allowing you to pay in 24 or even 36 monthly installments, which can significantly reduce the monthly financial burden. I ended up choosing a private clinic recommended by a friend. Although the total cost was slightly higher than the chain clinics, I felt the dentist was extremely responsible and explained everything very clearly. I hope my sharing is helpful to you all!
