Shortly after arriving in Spain, I had a minor health issue, and my family doctor recommended I get an abdominal ultrasound. I was a bit lost at first, unsure about the complexity of the process and the costs involved. After navigating the system, I’ve finally figured it out. Today, I’m sharing my experience with getting an ultrasound in Spain to help others who might need it.

Public Hospitals vs. Private Clinics
When seeking medical care in Spain, you generally have two paths: the public system through social security or the private system, which you pay for out-of-pocket or with private health insurance. For something like an ultrasound, the experience and cost between these two options can be worlds apart.
Public Hospitals
The main advantage is that it’s free
! As long as you are covered by public health insurance, the entire cost of the ultrasound—whether it’s for the abdomen, gynecology, or thyroid—is covered by the state. The typical process involves scheduling an appointment with your family doctor, who will then issue a referral for the test. You then take this referral to the designated public hospital or diagnostic center to book your appointment. The downside is also very clear: the waiting times can be extremely long. I was told I might have to wait 3 to 6 months. For someone anxious to get results, this wait can be agonizing, often prompting a look into private ultrasound prices
.
Private Clinics/Hospitals
If you have private health insurance to cover the ultrasound costs, the process is much simpler. Most insurance plans cover ultrasound examinations. You just need to find a clinic within your insurer’s network, call them directly to book an appointment, and it’s incredibly fast—you can usually get an appointment within a week. If you don’t have private insurance, paying out-of-pocket at a private clinic is also an option, but the [ultrasound prices in Spain] are not cheap. Because I couldn’t wait, I called a few private clinics to ask about their out-of-pocket prices. I found that the quotes varied quite a bit between different regions and clinics. Here are some of the approximate prices I was quoted, to give you an idea:
| Exam Type | Madrid / Barcelona City Center | Other Small/Medium Cities |
| Abdominal Ultrasound | €80 - €150 | €60 - €100 |
| Gynecological Ultrasound | €90 - €180 | €70 - €120 |
| Thyroid / Neck Ultrasound | €70 - €130 | €50 - €90 |
Cardiac Ultrasound | Higher price, typically €150+ | Higher price, typically €120+ |
In summary, my advice is this: if it’s not urgent and your condition isn’t serious, go with the public system, as it’s free. If your situation is more urgent, or you want quick results for peace of mind, then the private route is worth considering. If you have private insurance, use it. If you’re paying out-of-pocket, be sure to call several clinics to compare prices. I hope my experience is helpful to you all, and I welcome anyone with experience to add their comments and join the discussion below!
