They weren’t superheroes, they didn’t even have proper armor, but they were on the front lines for everyone, truly fighting with everything they had.
The Miracle of IFEMA in Madrid
Speaking of Spain’s pandemic response, we have to mention the IFEMA field hospital in Madrid. It was truly a miracle. In just a few days, a massive exhibition center was converted into what was then Europe’s largest temporary hospital. When I saw the news photos, I was stunned by the Spanish efficiency and spirit of unity. Countless volunteers and military personnel worked through the night to create this ‘ark of life’ capable of housing thousands of patients.
But what moved me the most were the ordinary healthcare workers. They faced not only physical exhaustion but also immense psychological pressure. Dealing with life and death every day, they also worried about bringing the virus home to their families. During that time, the whole of Spain would spontaneously applaud for them from their balconies at 8 PM every evening. Thinking about that scene still brings tears to my eyes.
