Hi everyone, I haven’t been living in Europe for long and I’m often travelling between France and Spain. Although I’m generally healthy, I can’t help but think about where to go if I get a headache or a fever. After all, the healthcare system here is quite different from what I’m used to back home. I’ve done some research and asked friends, putting together some information about hospitals in France and Spain. I’m sharing it here and would also love for others to add their suggestions and experiences!
Hospital Choices in France
France’s medical standards are top-notch globally, with a well-established system of public hospitals and private clinics. If you have social security (sécurité sociale) and supplementary insurance (mutuelle), a high percentage of your medical costs will be reimbursed. For major illnesses or emergencies, public hospitals are the top choice, as their equipment and doctors are highly authoritative.
Well-Known Hospitals in the Paris Area
Paris has the highest concentration of medical resources, with many famous hospitals located there. For example, Hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière is one of the largest hospitals in Europe with outstanding comprehensive capabilities. There are also specialized children’s hospitals like Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades, which is a leading authority in pediatrics. For tourists or newcomers without a long-term residence permit, the Hôpital Américain de Paris (American Hospital of Paris), located in the suburbs, is a good option. Although it’s a private and more expensive choice, it offers English-speaking services, making communication much easier.

Hospital Choices in Spain
Spain also has a universal public healthcare system that is free for residents and of a high standard. However, the downside of public hospitals is the extremely long waiting times; it might take months to see a specialist. That’s why many people purchase private health insurance to visit private hospitals, which is much faster. You can find more details in these hospital rankings, and you’ll see that private medical resources are particularly abundant in Madrid and Barcelona.
Well-Known Hospitals in Madrid and Barcelona
In Spain, many private hospital groups are very well-known, such as Quirónsalud, Sanitas, and HM Hospitales. These groups have hospital chains in major cities, offering excellent service and facilities. Here are a few that I’ve learned about for your reference:
| City | Hospital Name | Type | Features |
| Madrid | Hospital Universitario La Paz | Public | Strong overall capability, with several departments ranked top in the country |
| Madrid | Hospital Ruber Internacional | Private | Modern facilities, good service, favored by many celebrities |
| Barcelona | Hospital Clínic de Barcelona | Public | Very high level of research and clinical practice |
| Barcelona | Centro Médico Teknon | Private | Many international patients, hotel-like environment, some doctors speak English |
In an emergency, go directly to the emergency room (urgencias) of the nearest hospital. For minor ailments, you can see a general practitioner (GP) first. I hope this information is useful to you! You’re also welcome to share your own experiences with the healthcare system in France or Spain, such as which hospital provides good service or which doctor is particularly great.
