As a newcomer to Spain, I’m still getting familiar with the local healthcare system. I had some free time recently and decided to look into hospital rankings, especially comparing Spain with its neighbor, France, to see which country’s healthcare is better. I came across the latest World’s Best Hospitals 2024 list, published by the American magazine Newsweek in partnership with Statista. It seems very insightful, so I wanted to share it for discussion.
The ranking covers over 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries and regions. The evaluation criteria are quite comprehensive, including online surveys of medical experts, patient satisfaction data, hospital quality metrics, and the implementation of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (hospital ranking). Overall, it’s considered quite authoritative.

France vs. Spain: A Showdown in the Rankings
Let’s get straight to the part everyone is most interested in: the rankings. In this year’s global TOP 250 list, both France and Spain have a significant number of hospitals featured, positioning them as pillars of European healthcare.
France’s Representatives
France’s highest-ranked hospital is Hôpital Universitaire Pitié Salpêtrière in Paris, placing 36th globally. This historic hospital is renowned in fields like neurology and cardiology. Several other Parisian hospitals also made it into the global top 100, such as Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou and Hôpital Cochin, showcasing their considerable strength.
Spain’s Representatives
On Spain’s side, the top performer is Madrid’s Hospital Universitario La Paz, ranked 46th in the world. Close behind is Barcelona’s Hospital Clínic de Barcelona at 63rd. These two are essentially the flagships of Spain’s public healthcare system. Madrid’s Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón also secured a spot in the top 100.
For a more direct comparison, I’ve put together a simple table showing the distribution of the top hospitals from both countries in the global TOP 100:
| Country | Hospital Name | Global Rank |
| France | Hôpital Universitaire Pitié Salpêtrière | 36 |
| Spain | Hospital Universitario La Paz | 46 |
| Spain | Hospital Clínic de Barcelona | 63 |
| France | Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou | 70 |
| Spain | Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón | 94 |
From the top-tier hospitals, France seems to have a slight edge, but Spain’s number of ranked hospitals and overall strength are also very impressive. Of course, rankings are just one reference point; the actual patient experience is what matters most. Have any of you been to these renowned hospitals in Spain or France? What were your impressions of the service and technology? Feel free to share your experiences and provide some real-world insights for newcomers!
