When I first came to Spain, I’d heard that dental care was expensive, so I was always anxious about having any tooth problems. But of course, Murphy’s Law struck. A while ago, one of my molars started hurting terribly, and half of my face swelled up. I had no choice but to bite the bullet and see a dentist. I figure many of you might be curious about this, so today I’m starting this post to share my real experience and some tips about seeing a dentist in Spain, hopefully as a useful reference for everyone.
Public vs. Private: How to Choose?
First, let’s be clear: Spain’s public healthcare system basically doesn’t cover most dental issues. It usually only includes the most basic check-ups, pediatric dentistry, and extractions of non-viable ‘dead’ teeth, along with some maxillofacial surgeries. The common procedures we often need, such as fillings, cleanings, root canals, orthodontics, and teeth whitening, are not covered at all by the public system. So, don’t overthink it—just find a reliable private dental clinic. Private clinics are everywhere in Spain, and the competition is quite fierce, so the service and equipment are generally excellent.
Costs and Insurance for Private Clinics
When it comes to private clinics, the biggest concern for everyone is the price. It’s true that it’s not cheap, but it’s not as exorbitant as you might imagine. I recently had a root canal, and including the subsequent crown, the total cost was over a thousand euros. Luckily, I had purchased private dental insurance beforehand, so in the end, I only paid less than half of that out of pocket. This type of dental insurance costs just ten-something euros a month and is a great deal. It doesn’t cover the full cost, but it gives you a significant discount on each procedure. For example, a teeth cleaning might cost €50-€80 without insurance, but with insurance, many companies offer one free cleaning per year. Fillings can also be about half the price. Therefore, I strongly recommend getting dental insurance—it’s better to be safe than sorry! Common insurance companies like Adeslas, Sanitas, and Asisa all offer specific dental plans.

Based on my own experience and research, here is a rough price range for common procedures. Note that prices can vary by region and clinic:
| Procedure | Reference Price |
| Routine Check-up | Free - €30 |
| Teeth Cleaning | €50 - €80 |
| Filling | €60 - €100 |
| Root Canal | €200 - €400 |
| Wisdom Tooth Extraction | €90 - €250 |
| Crown | €400 - €700 |
Taking good care of your teeth in Spain is so important, not just for your health but also to protect your wallet. Brushing and flossing diligently, and getting regular cleanings and check-ups can really save you a lot of money. I hope my experience helps you all, and I welcome everyone to share their own dental stories and clinic recommendations in the comments below! Let’s share and help each other out!
