I just got back from the hospital after having my second baby! I’ve seen many moms-to-be on the forums asking what to wear and bring for giving birth in the hospital. It reminds me of how anxious I was before my first baby, packing my hospital bag to the brim with things I never even used. I’m much more experienced this time around, so today, as a mom who’s been through it, I want to share some tips on how to prepare your clothing for giving birth in a Spanish hospital.

What Should Mom Wear? Comfort and Convenience Are Key!
Actually, you don’t need to worry about what to wear during labor itself, as the hospital will provide a special gown for you—usually one that ties at the back, making it easy to put on, take off, and allow for various medical checks. So, besides learning some useful Spanish childbirth vocabulary, what you really need to prepare are clothes for your stay in the hospital room after giving birth.
- Pajamas/Nursing Gowns: I highly recommend front-buttoning pajamas or dedicated nursing gowns! They make breastfeeding incredibly convenient. I personally suggest bringing 2-3 sets because you’ll likely sweat a lot right after giving birth, or you might get milk stains or lochia on them, requiring frequent changes. Choose pure cotton for a soft, absorbent, and skin-friendly material.
- Slippers: Be sure to bring a pair of non-slip, comfortable slippers for walking around your room and to the bathroom.
- Socks: You can bring a few pairs of comfy cotton socks. Even though hospital rooms are heated, your body is weaker after childbirth, and keeping your feet warm is important.
- Going-Home Outfit: Prepare this outfit in advance and have a family member bring it on the day you’re discharged. Opt for loose, comfortable clothes like a maternity dress or sweatpants. Don’t expect to fit back into your pre-pregnancy jeans right away—that’s just not going to happen
! Your belly needs time to recover.
What Should the Newborn Baby Wear?
When it comes to baby clothes, there’s a significant difference between what public and private hospitals provide. However, regardless of which type of hospital you choose, it’s always a good idea to have some of your own items prepared.
| Hospital Type | What’s Provided | What’s Recommended to Pack |
| Public Hospital | Usually only provides the first outfit and a swaddle blanket | Bodysuits, Pajamas, a small hat (Gorrito) |
| , mittens (Manoplas), socks (Calcetines) |
| Private Hospital | Typically provides all clothing and diapers for the hospital stay | Just pack a cute going-home outfit and a receiving blanket |
In any case, packing a soft, adorable going-home outfit that you love is a must—it looks great for keepsake photos too
! I personally packed two bodysuits, two sets of pajamas, a little hat, and a pair of tiny socks. Additionally, a soft receiving blanket is very practical for both warmth and giving the baby a sense of security. As for diapers and wipes, most hospitals provide them, but it doesn’t hurt to bring a small pack just in case.
Spanish hospitals generally have user-friendly facilities and services, so you really don’t need to bring too much. Don’t make it look like you’re moving house, as it will just be more trouble to pack everything up when you leave. I hope my experience helps all the moms-to-be out there. Relax, and I wish you all a smooth and positive birth experience!
