I’ve just moved to Spain, and recently my elderly parent has been complaining of dizziness. I checked their blood pressure, and wow, the systolic pressure is almost 160. Although they’ve had this issue back home, being in a new place makes seeking medical care a bit daunting. I’d like to ask the experienced members of this forum: how do you find a specialist for high blood pressure in Spain? Do you go directly to a major hospital to make an appointment, or is there a specific process to follow?

I’ve spent a lot of time searching online and it’s all a bit overwhelming. It seems the standard procedure here is to first see your GP (family doctor), who then decides if a referral to a specialist is necessary. For high blood pressure, this usually means a referral to a Cardiologist or an Internist (Internal Medicine specialist). Has anyone gone through this? How long does it usually take to see a specialist after getting a referral from a GP? I’ve heard the waiting times in the public system can be very long, which is a bit concerning.
Public vs. Private Hospitals
I’m also considering using private health insurance directly. I got Adeslas insurance for my parent. Would using private insurance be much faster? Is the overall experience better? Of course, the cost would be higher, but it might be worth it to see a good doctor sooner. Below is a simple comparison I’ve put together for public vs. private healthcare. Please correct me if I’m wrong!
| Aspect | Public Healthcare | Private Healthcare |
| Pros | Low cost or free | Fast appointments, short waiting times, better facilities |
| Cons | Long waiting times, complex procedures | High premiums and out-of-pocket costs for some services |
| Process | GP -> Referral -> Specialist | Directly book an appointment with a specialist in the insurance network |
Some Well-Regarded Hospitals and Doctors
I’ve also listed some well-known hospitals in Madrid and Barcelona for cardiology that I found during my research. Feel free to use this as a reference or add your own recommendations!
- Hospital Universitario La Paz: A very famous public general hospital in Madrid, with a strong cardiology department.
- Hospital Clínic: A top-tier public hospital in Barcelona, highly regarded for both its research and clinical practice.
- Clínica Universidad de Navarra: A top-tier private hospital, known for its excellent service and state-of-the-art equipment, though it comes with a high price tag.
- Centro Médico Teknon: A high-end private hospital under the Quironsalud group, often chosen by celebrities.
Finally, I’d really appreciate it if anyone could recommend a specific doctor. Especially doctors who are patient and experienced in treating high blood pressure in the elderly. Since my parent doesn’t speak the language, I’m hoping to find a responsible doctor who is a good communicator. Thank you all in advance for your help regarding hypertension treatment in Spain!
