Having recently moved to Spain, I’ve been paying close attention to the healthcare system here. After all, it’s only natural for us to get sick from time to time. I knew that Spain has both public and private hospitals, but I was never quite sure which hospitals excelled in specific specialties. Recently, I came across the latest Health Reputation Monitor report published by MERCO, which includes very detailed specialty rankings. I’ve compiled this information from the Spanish hospital rankings to share with everyone, and I hope you find it useful!
This ranking is quite authoritative, as it synthesizes opinions from doctors, nurses, patient associations, and medical journalists—it’s not just a random list. When we get sick, especially with more complex conditions, finding the right specialist and hospital is crucial. For example, for heart problems, Hospital A might be a great all-rounder, but Hospital B’s cardiology department could be the best in the country. With this ranking, we can more accurately find the right hospital for a specific condition.

Top Hospitals and Their Strongest Specialties
The report lists rankings for over 20 specialties, and while I can’t list them all, I’ve selected a few key ones that might be of most interest and highlighted the top-ranking hospitals. Overall, Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid and Hospital Clínic de Barcelona remain the two giants, consistently ranking at the top in most specialties.
Top 3 Hospitals in Several Key Specialties
I’ve created a simple table to list the rankings for a few common specialties to make it more intuitive. You can use this to see which hospital is closest to you or which one best suits your situation. Of course, this is just a reference; your final choice will also depend on your insurance and specific medical condition.
| Specialty | First Place | Second Place | Third Place |
| Cardiology | H. U. La Paz | H. Clínic | H. Gregorio Marañón |
| Oncology | H. Vall d’Hebron | H. U. 12 de Octubre | H. Clínic |
| Orthopedics & Traumatology | H. U. La Paz | H. Clínic | H. Vall d’Hebron |
| Pediatrics | H. U. La Paz | H. Sant Joan de Déu | H. Gregorio Marañón |
After seeing this ranking, I feel much more at ease. In the future, if my family or I need to see a specialist, we won’t be running around in circles. For example, for pediatrics, La Paz in Madrid and Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona are definitely top choices. Do you have any other good hospitals or doctors to recommend?
