When you’ve just moved to Spain, the last things you want are getting sick or having a toothache! Anyone who’s been there knows the feeling. A toothache can be absolute torture, and the healthcare system here is very different from back home. The public system has long waiting lists and covers very few procedures, while private clinics are everywhere, but you worry about choosing the wrong one and getting ripped off. Having learned a few things the hard way over the years, I’m sharing some information about dental care in Spain based on my own experiences and recommendations from friends. I hope this helps!
First, it’s important to understand that public healthcare in Spain offers very limited dental coverage. It generally only includes a few services like emergency extractions, basic check-ups, and pediatric dentistry. Procedures such as cleanings, fillings, root canals, orthodontics, and dental implants are not covered by the public system at all; you must go to a private clinic. Therefore, for most of us, seeing a dentist means going to a private clinic. This makes having a good dental insurance plan almost essential, as it can save you a lot of money.
Which are the most trustworthy dental clinics in Spain?
When it comes to private dentistry, Spain has many large chains and highly-rated private clinics with excellent service and technology. Here are a few of the most popular and common ones, which you can search for in your own city:
- Sanitas Milenium Dental: Sanitas is one of Spain’s largest health insurance companies. Their Milenium Dental chain has clinics all over the country, offering wide coverage and standardized services, making it very convenient if you have their insurance.
- Adeslas Dental: Similar to Sanitas, this is the dental chain owned by top insurance company Adeslas. They have a vast number of clinics and a well-established appointment and treatment process.
- Clínica Dental Quirónsalud: Quirónsalud is a leading private hospital group in Spain. Their dental clinics are often equipped with more advanced technology and staffed by more authoritative doctors. Naturally, their prices are a bit higher, making them suitable for more complex dental issues.
- Vitaldent / Dentix: These are also very large chains, and you’ll often see their ads. However, they’ve had some negative press in recent years, so if you’re considering them, it’s best to check the reviews for a specific branch. You can find more discussions about Spanish hospitals

Costs and Insurance
The cost of dental care is definitely a top concern for everyone. The price difference with and without dental insurance is huge. Generally, a basic dental insurance plan costs between €10-20 per month, which makes many services free and provides significant discounts on other treatments. Here’s a rough cost comparison for your reference:
| Procedure | Approx. Cost Without Insurance | Co-payment With Insurance |
| Cleaning | €50 - €80 | Free or around €10 |
| Filling | €60 - €120 | €40 - €80 |
| Root Canal | €200 - €400 | €150 - €300 |
| Dental Implant | €1200 - €2000+ | Slight discount, but still a major expense |
Finally, a few tips: When choosing a clinic, always check the reviews on Google Maps or Doctoralia first
! This is the most direct way to gauge a clinic’s reputation. Second, for your first visit, you might want to start with a cleaning or a check-up to experience the dentist’s service and professionalism before committing to more complex treatments. If you have a language barrier, call or email in advance to ask if the clinic offers services in English or even Chinese. Many clinics in large cities have international departments.
