Hi everyone, I’ve recently settled in Spain and am having some dental issues. I feel like I need a full check-up and possibly a filling. Back in my home country, I had a regular dentist, but now I’m completely in the dark here and don’t know where to start. I did a quick search on Google Maps and was overwhelmed by the sheer number of dental clinics around. I have no idea which ones are reliable and which ones to avoid.
I’d like to ask the long-time expats here: are there any highly recommended dental hospitals or chain clinics? I’m mainly based in Madrid, but I’d welcome recommendations for exceptional clinics in Barcelona or other major cities as a reference for others. While I am budget-conscious, I prioritize the dentist’s skill and the clinic’s equipment. After all, your teeth are for life, and I don’t want to choose a cheap option only to end up with a mess—that would be penny-wise and pound-foolish.

I’ve heard that while Spain’s public healthcare system is free, it doesn’t seem to cover much for dental care, basically just extractions and other emergencies. More complex treatments like root canals, orthodontics, or implants have to be done at private clinics. Is that your experience as well? Also, with so many private clinics, how do you all go about choosing one? Do you rely on Google ratings or personal recommendations? Are there any well-known chains, like Sanitas, Adeslas, or DKV? How is their dental service?
My Own Research
To show I’ve done my homework, I’ve put together a simple list of the potential pros and cons of different types of clinics. Please let me know if this seems accurate or if you have anything to add:
| Clinic Type | Pros | Cons |
| Large Chain Clinics | Relatively transparent pricing, newer equipment, may offer package deals | Dentists may not be fixed, potential for upselling, assembly-line feel |
| Local Private Clinics | Fixed dentist, more personalized service, good doctor-patient relationship | Equipment might be outdated compared to some Spanish hospitals, non-transparent pricing, requires careful vetting |
| University-Affiliated Hospitals | Cutting-edge technology, specialist consultations, advantageous for complex cases | Difficult to get an appointment, long waiting times, possibility of being treated by interns |
I also have a question about dental insurance. Is it really worth it? I’ve noticed many insurance plans only offer a discount on treatment costs and have waiting periods. If I just need a check-up and a filling, would it be simpler to pay out-of-pocket? I’d appreciate any insights from the experts here. Thanks in advance to everyone! Thank you so much
