I just moved to Spain not long ago, and recently, while chatting with friends, everyone was talking about how great the Spanish healthcare system is, especially the high success rates for serious illnesses like cancer. I was quite surprised and a bit skeptical—is it really that amazing?
I haven’t really been to any major hospitals here myself, just to a local clinic for a cold prescription. So, I don’t have a clear idea of the whole process or the actual quality of care. I understand that the so-called ‘success rate’ is a very complex statistic that depends on many factors, like the effectiveness of early screening, the treatment plans used, and even patients’ lifestyles. Therefore, a single number for Spanish hospital success rates probably doesn’t tell the whole story.

However, data can still reveal some trends. I did a little research and found some data on five-year survival rates for various diseases in Spain, and they do seem quite high, especially for some common types of cancer. Of course, this is all publicly available data, and I’m not sure how it translates to individual experiences. Here’s a simple comparison I put together for you to look at:
| Disease Type | Spain | OECD Average |
| Breast Cancer | 86% | 85% |
| Colorectal Cancer | 64% | 63% |
| Lung Cancer | 18% | 17% |
So, I wanted to start this thread to ask everyone: has anyone here been treated in a major Spanish hospital, especially for more complex conditions? What was your personal experience like? Do you find the doctors here to be reliable? Is there a big difference in treatment outcomes between public and private hospitals? For instance, do private hospitals achieve better results because they use more advanced drugs or equipment? I welcome everyone to join the conversation and share your real experiences and opinions to give newcomers like me some insight!
