Lately, I’m not sure if it’s the change of season or something I ate, but my stomach has been feeling uncomfortable. Sometimes I feel bloated, other times there’s a dull ache. Usually, for minor issues, I’d just go to the pharmacy for some over-the-counter medicine, but this time it’s been lasting for a while, so I think it’s safer to get it checked out at a hospital.
But here’s the problem: which department should I go to for this kind of stomach issue in Spain? Back home, we’re used to heading straight to the ‘Gastroenterology Department,’ but I’m a bit lost here. I’m not sure if there’s an exact equivalent or if I need to see a family doctor first.

What is the Gastroenterology Department Called in Spain?
After doing some research online and asking friends, I finally figured it out. Both public and private hospitals in Spain have a specialized department for digestive health, which is called Aparato Digestivo in Spanish, literally translating to ‘Digestive System.’ This department covers a wide range of issues, basically anything related to the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. So, if you’re experiencing symptoms like stomach pain, acid reflux, indigestion, diarrhea, or constipation, this is the right department to seek.
How to Book an Appointment with a Gastroenterologist?
Here, the process differs depending on whether you’re using the public healthcare system or private insurance.
- Public Healthcare: If you’re using the public system, you can’t book an appointment directly with the gastroenterology department. You must first schedule a visit with your family doctor (médico de cabecera). During the consultation, describe your symptoms in detail, and they will make an initial diagnosis. If your doctor deems it necessary, they will issue a referral to a specialist, which in this case is a gastroenterologist in Spain. After that, you just have to wait for a call or letter from the hospital with your appointment details. The waiting time for this… well, as they say, paciencia.
- Private Insurance: If you have private health insurance, it’s much more convenient! You can directly search for affiliated gastroenterologists or clinics on your insurance provider’s app or website and then call or book an appointment online. You can usually get an appointment within a few days, making it much more efficient. However, note that for the first visit, some specialists might still require a referral from a general practitioner, but this process is typically very fast within the private system.
| Healthcare System | Appointment Process | Pros | Cons |
| Public Healthcare | Family Doctor -> Get Referral -> Wait for Specialist Appointment | Free or very low cost | Long waiting times, complex process |
| Private Insurance | Directly Book Specialist | Fast, more choices | Requires insurance purchase, fixed expense |
So the answer is a definite yes, Spain has very professional gastroenterology departments. It’s just that the process of seeing a doctor varies greatly depending on the healthcare route you take.
