I finally had the wisdom tooth that had been tormenting me for almost a year removed. The procedure went smoothly, but my wallet is feeling the pain. I noticed there aren’t many forum posts about visiting the dentist, so I decided to share my experience with wisdom tooth extraction in Spain, including the costs, as a reference for anyone who might need it.
Public vs. Private: A Tough Decision
In my case, I had a lower horizontal impacted wisdom tooth that was growing sideways and had become inflamed. The pain was excruciating. Initially, I consulted my GP, hoping to get it removed for free through the public health system. The doctor was very helpful and gave me a referral to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department at a public hospital. However, as many of you know, the waiting list for an appointment (Cita) in the public system is incredibly long. My appointment was scheduled for four months later… I simply couldn’t wait that long, so I reluctantly turned to private clinics.

A Survey of Private Clinic Prices
Since I decided to go private, I inquired at several clinics and found that the prices vary quite a bit. Based in Madrid, I consulted three dental clinics of different sizes. You can look at this comparison to get a general idea of the costs.
| Clinic Type | X-ray Fee | Quote for Lower Impacted Wisdom Tooth Extraction |
| Large Chain Dental Clinic | First consultation free or included | 250€ - 350€ |
| Mid-sized Local Private Clinic | Approx. 30€ - 50€ | 200€ - 300€ |
| Small Solo Practitioner Clinic | Approx. 40€ | 180€ - 250€ |
It’s worth noting that this is the price for extracting a single tooth. If your case is more complex, for instance, requiring general anesthesia or a more precise CBCT scan because the tooth root is close to a nerve, the price will be higher. I ultimately chose a local clinic with a good reputation, and the total cost for the X-ray and extraction was €280. The dentist was very skilled; the whole procedure took less than half an hour. Afterwards, I was given an ice pack and a prescription for anti-inflammatory medication.
To sum up my feelings: if you’re not in a hurry and your wisdom tooth situation isn’t particularly complicated, you can patiently wait for the public hospital, as it’s free. But if you’re like me, dealing with an acutely inflamed, painfully impacted wisdom tooth, or you just don’t want to wait that long for a wisdom tooth extraction in Spain, then going straight to a private clinic is the better option. Although it’s more expensive, it solves the problem quickly, and the money spent is essentially for buying peace of mind buying relief from pain. For those with dental insurance, remember to check your coverage beforehand. Sometimes you can get partial reimbursement, and every little bit saved helps!
