Lately, my teeth have been looking a bit yellow, probably from all the coffee… I’ve become hesitant to smile broadly in photos, which got me thinking about teeth whitening. I’ve done a fair bit of research on clinics here in Spain and found that the prices vary wildly, and it’s quite a complex market. Today, I’m sharing my research to help anyone facing the same issue.

Common Teeth Whitening Methods and Prices
In Spain, there are basically two main types of professional teeth whitening: in-clinic laser whitening and dentist-supervised at-home whitening trays. I consulted several private dental clinics in Madrid and Barcelona. Public hospitals generally don’t offer purely cosmetic procedures like this, so private clinics are the way to go.
In-Clinic Laser Whitening
This is the method you’ve most likely heard of. You lie back in a chair, a dentist applies a whitening agent to your teeth, and then a blue light is used to activate it for about 40 to 60 minutes. The main advantage is that it’s fast-acting; you’ll see your teeth get several shades whiter immediately, with noticeable results. On the downside, it’s expensive, and you might experience some tooth sensitivity or a dull ache during the procedure. The teeth whitening costs generally range from 250 to 600 €. The wide price range depends on the clinic’s reputation, the brand of whitening agent used, and the city. Some cheaper packages might only include a single session, leading to shorter-lasting results, so be sure to ask about this.
At-Home Custom Trays
For this method, the dentist first takes a mold of your teeth to create a set of transparent trays that fit perfectly. You’re then given several tubes of a lower-concentration whitening gel to apply in the trays yourself. You’ll typically wear them for a few hours each day or overnight for one to two weeks. The advantage is that it’s gentler on the teeth and less irritating, and it’s also cheaper than in-clinic laser whitening. The downside is that it requires consistency and the results are gradual. Prices generally range from 150 to 350 €. Some clinics also offer a ‘hybrid whitening package,’ which involves an initial in-clinic laser session followed by at-home trays to maintain and enhance the results. Naturally, this is the most expensive option, usually costing between 400 and 800 €.
To make the comparison clearer, I’ve created a simple table:
| Whitening Method | Average Price Range | Pros | Cons |
| In-Clinic Laser Whitening | 250 - 600 € | Fast results, single session | High cost, potential sensitivity |
| At-Home Custom Trays | 150 - 350 € | Lower cost, gentler | Gradual results, requires consistency |
| Hybrid Whitening | 400 - 800 € | Best and longest-lasting results | Most expensive |
A final reminder: before getting any whitening treatment, it’s essential to have a dentist check the condition of your teeth. Any issues like cavities or gum disease must be treated first. Also, the whitening effect isn’t permanent. How long it lasts mainly depends on your diet and oral hygiene habits. I hope this helps! If anyone has had this done, feel free to share your experience.
