Lately, my stomach has been feeling uncomfortable, with some acid reflux and bloating, so my GP suggested I get tested for Helicobacter pylori. After visiting a few places and asking around, I’ve gathered some information about the costs of H. pylori tests in Spanish hospitals, and I’d like to share it with anyone who might find it helpful.

Overview of Test Methods and Costs
There are several common methods for testing for H. pylori, and the costs can vary significantly. The most common are the breath test and blood test. If the situation is more complex, a doctor might recommend an endoscopy. Depending on your insurance and whether you go public or private, the prices are completely different.
Public Hospitals
If you are covered by public health insurance (social security), getting medical care is much more straightforward. The process usually involves booking an appointment with your GP and describing your symptoms. If the doctor deems it necessary, they will give you a referral for the test. Through the public system, whether it’s a breath test or a blood test, the test itself is free. The downside, as you might expect, is that the waiting time can be very long. It’s common to wait a month or two from getting the referral to actually having the test. For those who can’t wait or prefer convenience, private healthcare might be the way to go.
Private Hospitals/Clinics
The main advantage of private healthcare is speed. If you have private health insurance, such as from Adeslas, Sanitas, or Asisa, the process for a [Helicobacter pylori test] is similar to the public system. You first see a GP, who will then authorize you to go to a designated lab or hospital for the test. The insurance company will cover most or all of the cost, so you’ll pay little to nothing out of pocket, and appointments are much faster. If you don’t have insurance and want to pay for the test yourself, you’ll have to cover the full cost. I inquired at a few private labs in Madrid, and here are the prices for your reference:
Price Comparison for Self-Paid Tests
| Test Method | Average Price Range | Features |
| C13/C14 Breath Test | 60 - 100 € | Non-invasive, high accuracy, the most common detection method |
| Blood Antibody Test | 30 - 50 € | Can only determine past infection, cannot confirm a current active infection |
| Stool Antigen Test | 40 - 70 € | High accuracy, but the collection process can be a bit awkward |
| Endoscopy with Biopsy | 300 - 600+ € | The most accurate, but invasive; usually done for severe symptoms |
If you’re just looking for an initial screening, the breath test is the most cost-effective option. I ended up going to a private lab, paid 70€ for a breath test, and got the results the next day, which confirmed I was positive. Now I’m following my doctor’s prescription for treatment and feeling much better. I hope this experience helps you all, and I wish you good health! No more eating junk food for me.
