I’ve recently seen many discussions in online forums about schooling for children, with a particular interest in international schools. As I’ve been researching schools for my own child lately, I’ve done a lot of homework. I’d like to share what I’ve learned about the international school fees in Spain to help out other parents in the same boat.
The Components of International School Costs
First, it’s important to understand that the cost of an international school is much more than just the ‘tuition fee’. Typically, the total annual expense includes several components:
- Enrollment Fee (Matrícula): This is usually a one-time payment upon initial admission, and it can be quite hefty, ranging from several hundred to a few thousand euros. It is
generally non-refundable. Some schools may also charge an annual “re-enrollment fee”.
- Tuition Fee: This is the largest expense, paid either by term or monthly. The fees vary significantly by age group, generally being cheaper for younger children and most expensive for high school.
- Meal Plan: This is mandatory at most schools and is charged monthly or per term, typically costing between €150-€200 per month.
- School Bus: If needed, this is another significant expense related to [Spanish international school fees]. Depending on the distance, it can range from €100-€300 per month.
- Other Miscellaneous Fees: This includes costs for books and materials, uniforms, insurance, extracurricular activities, school trips, and more. These odds and ends can easily add up to another one or two thousand euros per year.
Tuition Fee Estimates for Major Cities
I’ve primarily researched Madrid and Barcelona, as they have the highest concentration of educational resources. Other cities like Valencia and Malaga are generally more affordable, but they also offer fewer choices for top-tier schools.

The table below is a rough guide I compiled based on information from the websites of several mid-to-upper-tier British and American schools, to give you a clearer picture:
| Grade Level | Age | Approximate Annual Tuition |
| Early Years / Preschool | 3-5 years | €6,000 - €12,000 |
| Primary School | 6-11 years | €9,000 - €18,000 |
| Middle School | 12-15 years | €11,000 - €22,000 |
| High School | 16-18 years | €13,000 - €25,000 |
As you can see, for one child to go from preschool through to high school graduation, the tuition fees alone can easily exceed €200,000. When you factor in all the miscellaneous costs, the total becomes even more staggering. For instance, at top-tier schools like Runnymede College in Madrid or Benjamin Franklin International School in Barcelona, the annual cost for high school, including all fees, can approach €30,000.
Sending a child to an international school is indeed a massive investment. Beyond looking at the [international school fees], it’s crucial to evaluate the school’s curriculum, faculty quality, facilities, and student body. I highly recommend starting your planning one to two years in advance and attending Open Days at several schools to get a firsthand feel. I hope this information is helpful, and I welcome other experienced parents to share their insights! 😊
