I’ve been busy with my child’s primary school applications recently. Based in Madrid, we’ve been focusing on international schools for future flexibility. After visiting several schools and talking with other parents, I realized it can be quite a complex process. Since there aren’t many forum posts on this topic, I decided to share my experience to hopefully provide some guidance and make the process smoother for other parents.

Application Process and Timeline
International schools typically start their application process much earlier than public or private schools. Most open their applications for the next academic year between September and October of the preceding year. Therefore, it’s safest to start preparing one year in advance. If you miss the first round of applications for international schools in Spain, your choices will be much more limited, even if spots become available later.
My Application Timeline
- September-October: Finalize a list of target schools and attend their Open Days. This step is crucial as it offers a firsthand look at the school’s atmosphere, facilities, and educational philosophy. Talk to teachers and parents of current students—you’ll get a wealth of information.
- November-December: Submit the online application form and mail or upload the required documents. Be meticulous during this stage to ensure no files are missed.
- January-March (following year): The school will schedule interviews and assessments. Primary school assessments are less formal than those for secondary school, mainly observing the child’s behavior, social skills, and basic cognitive abilities. Parent interviews are also common, primarily to discuss whether the family’s educational philosophy aligns with the school’s.
- March-April (following year): Admission offers are sent out. Once you receive an offer, you must pay a deposit to reserve the spot within a specified timeframe, or the place will be offered to someone else.
Core Application Materials Checklist
Each school’s requirements may vary slightly, but they generally include the following items. I recommend scanning digital copies of all documents in advance for easy submission.
| Document Type | Description |
| Application Form | Download from the school’s website or fill out online |
| Child’s Identification | Copy of passport, NIE, or birth certificate |
| Parents’ Identification | Copy of passports, NIEs |
| Child’s Passport-sized Photos | Usually 2, with a white background |
| Proof of Address | Proof of residence (e.g., Empadronamiento) |
| Vaccination Record | Copy of the Vaccination Record (Cartilla de Vacunación) |
| Recommendation Letters | Some [international schools in Spain] may require a recommendation letter from the child’s previous kindergarten or preschool teacher. |
Bank Statements | Some schools with [boarding options at primary schools in Spain] might check the family’s financial status, but this is not a universal requirement. |
Although the application process can be tedious, it’s manageable if you plan ahead and take it step by step. We ultimately chose a school with a British curriculum, as we were impressed by its comprehensive curriculum and extracurricular activities. I hope this information is helpful, and I welcome other parents to add their own experiences and join the discussion!
