Since there’s a possibility we might move to Germany in the future, we’ve started looking into German international schools in Spain. Why Choose a German School?
We chose to look at German schools for a few key reasons: their rigorous academic system, the multilingual environment, and the highly-regarded German International Abitur (DIA) diploma offered by German international schools. This diploma allows for direct application to German universities, providing a very smooth pathway for children who want to pursue undergraduate studies in Germany. Moreover, compared to British or American schools, German schools generally have more affordable tuition fees, offering what feels like better value for money.
An Overview of Major German Schools in Spain
There aren’t a huge number of German schools in Spain, but they are present in the major cities, all part of the German Schools Abroad network (ZfA). I’ve mainly focused on these ones:
- Deutsche Schule Madrid (Colegio Alemán de Madrid): This is the oldest and largest, with a reputation for top-tier academic quality. Admission is highly competitive; I’ve heard you need to get on the waiting list well in advance, and priority is given to families with German nationality or a German-speaking background. Its tuition fees are in the mid-to-high range for international schools in Madrid.
- Deutsche Schule Barcelona (Colegio Alemán de Barcelona): Similar to the school in Madrid, this is also a very popular choice. It’s located in Esplugues de Llobregat and has modern facilities. In addition to German, Spanish, and English, Catalan is also a compulsory subject.
- Deutsche Schule Valencia (Colegio Alemán de Valencia): Compared to the schools in Madrid and Barcelona, admission here might be slightly less competitive, but it remains a highly-regarded local institution. Regarding German international school fees, they are also a bit more affordable than the previous two.
There are also German schools in places like Málaga, Tenerife, and Bilbao, which are great options for families settled in those regions. Their teaching models and curricula generally follow the German education system.
Curriculum & Fee Overview

It can be quite difficult for older children from non-German-speaking families to enroll mid-stream. Most German schools prefer students to start from kindergarten or the early primary years to better integrate into the German-language environment.
