I just finished researching school applications for my little one, and my head is spinning! I noticed there aren’t many dedicated posts about admission timelines for international schools in Spain, so I’m sharing the research I’ve done. I hope it helps other parents in the same boat.

Understanding the Key Application Window
Unlike some other countries, international school admission times in Spain are quite flexible, but they generally follow one rule: applying a year in advance is the norm. This is especially true for popular, high-demand schools, like the top British and American schools in Madrid and Barcelona, where rolling admission spots are very limited. Generally, the ideal time to apply is from September to December of the year before entry. During this period, schools begin accepting applications for the next academic year, and this is when the most places are available. If you miss this window for international school enrollment, you’ll likely end up on a waiting list, which puts you in a much less favorable position.
Timeline Differences Between Curriculums
Although the general timeline is similar, there are some slight differences in application timing between different school systems. I’ve put together a simple summary:
| School System | Best Time to Start Applying | Key Deadlines/Events |
| British Schools | September-October of the year before entry | Autumn open days, submit application before Christmas |
| American Schools | October-November of the year before entry | Usually have Early Decision and Regular Decision options |
| IB System Schools | September-December of the year before entry | Application window is wider, but it’s best to contact popular schools early |
| French/German Schools | Follow their home country’s academic calendar; consulting a year in advance is also recommended | Language requirements are stricter |
Key Points of the Application Process
For the most part, the application process is quite similar across schools. The first step is always to check the school’s official website for information, or to email or call the admissions office directly. They will inform you about the required documents, which typically include: an application form, a copy of your child’s passport/residency card, school reports from the last one or two years, a birth certificate, and a vaccination record. After submitting the documents, the school will arrange an interview or an entrance exam. For younger children, this is often a play-based session to observe their behavior and social skills (it’s also helpful to be aware of the international school holidays when planning your family calendar). Older students, however, will have a written exam, primarily in English and Math. So, preparing in advance is really, really important!
Choosing a school for your child is a long and sometimes overwhelming process. I recommend that once you have shortlisted a few preferred schools, you should immediately go to their websites to subscribe to their admissions newsletter or follow them on social media. This way, you won’t miss any important dates. Wishing everyone’s kids success in getting into their dream school!
