My family is making some plans, so I’ve started researching international schools in Spain, and I’m finding the topic to be vast and complex. There’s a lot of information online, but it feels scattered, and much of it seems like agency advertising. That’s why I wanted to start this thread to chat with fellow forum members, especially parents who have already enrolled their children in these schools. I’m hoping you can share some real experiences.

I’m mainly focusing on a few major cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Malaga. It seems these places have the highest concentration of educational resources and the most options. Personally, I’m leaning towards schools with the IB curriculum, as I feel it offers more versatility for university applications later on. The A-Level system is also a great option, especially if the goal is to attend a UK university after graduating from one of the Spanish international schools. American-curriculum schools seem to be less common, but there are some top-tier ones available.
First Impressions of International Schools in Major Cities
I’ve spent some time compiling information on the most highly-rated and well-known schools, including a look into the tuition fees for international schools in Spain, and created a simple table for easy comparison. This information is primarily sourced from school websites and various education forums, so it’s definitely not exhaustive—it’s just my personal research. Please point out any mistakes you find!
| City | School Name | Main Curriculum | Personal Notes |
| Madrid | King’s College, The British School of Madrid | British Curriculum | A prestigious, long-standing school. Academically very rigorous, I’ve heard, with top-tier tuition fees. |
| Madrid | International College of Spain | IB | Purely an IB school. The student body is very international, and it has state-of-the-art facilities. |
| Barcelona | The British School of Barcelona | British, IB | Has several campuses in Barcelona for different age groups. It has a very good reputation. |
| Barcelona | Benjamin Franklin International School | American, IB | A top-tier American school with a long history. I hear their sports programs are excellent. |
| Valencia | Caxton College | British, Spanish | Offers a dual curriculum, providing more options. It’s very well-known locally. |
| Malaga | Sotogrande International School | IB | Located in an affluent area. Boarding is a key feature; the environment and facilities are impeccable. |
Some Personal Dilemmas and Questions
My biggest dilemma right now is how to balance a school’s academic reputation, facilities, location, and tuition fees. For example, King’s College in Madrid is academically strong, but I’ve heard it can be very high-pressure, and I’m not sure if my child would adapt well. Barcelona also offers many choices, but the cost of living there is high. The schools in Valencia and Malaga seem to offer better value for money, and the lifestyle on the sun-drenched coast is very appealing, but the number of top-tier schools doesn’t seem to match Madrid or Barcelona. I briefly considered schools in smaller cities but decided against it.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Are there any parents here whose children attend these schools? What’s the real learning atmosphere like? Is there a high teacher turnover rate? How are the children’s social lives? And especially for families like ours who are non-native Spanish speakers, do kids integrate quickly? Any information would be incredibly valuable. Thanks in advance, everyone!
