Hi everyone, I’ve been a little puzzled recently and was hoping to get some insights from the experienced members here on the forum.
My child just transferred to a British international school here in Madrid this year. Not long after school started, he came home all excited about running for something called the ‘Student Council’. At first, I was quite pleased, thinking it’s a great opportunity for him to develop new skills. But after giving it some thought, I realized I know very little about it, much like other topics such as [Spanish international school uniforms]. Is it the same as the student unions from my own school days? It doesn’t seem to be.

I took a look at the school’s official website, and the description sounds very impressive—calling it a bridge between students and the school administration, responsible for organizing events, voicing student opinions, and so on. It sounds quite powerful, but the details on how it actually operates are vague. For instance, can they genuinely influence school decisions? Or is it just about organizing dances and sports games? My son is so enthusiastic, preparing speeches and designing posters. While I support his passion, I’m also a bit worried his expectations might be too high.
Main Structure and Functions of the Student Council
Based on the handbook my child brought home and some information I found online, I’ve put together a rough outline of their school’s student council structure. I’m not sure if it’s similar to other schools, but let’s take a look together:
| Position | Main Responsibilities |
| President | Represents the student body, chairs meetings, and communicates with senior school staff |
| Vice President | Assists the President and coordinates internal affairs |
| Secretary | Takes meeting minutes, manages documents and communication records |
| Treasurer | Manages the council’s funds and creates budgets for events |
| Year Representative | Represents students in their grade level and gathers feedback from peers |
The division of labor seems quite clear. My son wants to run for Year Representative for his grade, which he says is an entry-level position. I’m particularly curious about the Treasurer role. Does the student council really have its own budget? Where does the funding come from? Is it allocated by the school, or do they raise funds through their own activities? I feel there’s a lot to learn about how these Spanish international schools operate.
So, regarding [Spanish international schools], I’d like to sincerely ask those of you with children attending them, especially friends who have participated in or understand the Student Council:
- What role does the Student Council actually play within the school? Do they really have a say?
- What specific skills does participating in the Student Council help a child develop? Besides looking good on their profile, does it offer any real advantage for university applications?
- Is the entire election and operational process very complicated? Does it take up a lot of study time?
Thank you all in advance for sharing! I’m hoping to hear some real, down-to-earth experiences, not just the official promotional material. After all, what we parents care about most is whether our children can achieve genuine growth. Looking forward to your thoughtful replies!
