Lately, I’ve been researching several American international schools here in Madrid and Barcelona. Besides the big things like curriculum and tuition fees, one small detail has really caught my attention: the school uniform. From watching American TV shows, I always had the impression that American schools either don’t have uniforms or have that preppy, elite look with plaid skirts and blazers. It wasn’t until I came to Spain that I realized the uniforms at American international schools here are so varied!
American School Uniforms: Casual vs. Preppy
I’ve found that the American school uniforms here can be roughly divided into two styles. One is super casual, like at The American School of Madrid and The American School of Barcelona. Their uniforms are basically just Polo shirts, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweatpants with the school logo. The colors are limited to a few, like blue, white, and gray. The impression I get is that the schools don’t want to put too much pressure on kids about ‘what to wear,’ emphasizing comfort and school identity is enough. It really has that free-spirited feel of an American public school.

The other style is more of a preppy, British-inspired look. Even though they are American schools, the uniform design is noticeably more formal. For example, some grades at Benjamin Franklin International School have combinations of shirts, V-neck sweaters, pleated skirts, or trousers. While not as strict as the uniforms at purely British American international schools, the overall look is much sharper. I personally lean towards this style; it feels more ceremonial, and kids look smarter in them. Of course, the price is also quite ‘pretty’.
Are School Uniforms Really Necessary?
The debate over school uniforms is an old one. I’ve heard some parents say that uniforms make life easier—no more morning struggles over what to wear, and it helps avoid peer pressure over clothes. But other parents feel that uniforms stifle a child’s individuality and sense of style, and a full set from an American international school can be quite expensive. For instance, my child really dislikes pullovers, so when I saw schools that only offer pullover sweatshirts, I quietly crossed them off my list. What are your thoughts on this?
I’ve put together a simple table summarizing the uniform characteristics of a few popular American schools as a reference for other parents who are also school-hunting.
| School Name | Uniform Style | Key Items |
| American School of Madrid | Casual / Sporty | Polo shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants |
| American School of Barcelona | Casual / Sporty | Logo T-shirts, Polo shirts, fleece jackets |
| Benjamin Franklin Int’l School | More formal, varies by grade | Shirts, V-neck sweaters, plaid skirts, trousers |
| International College Spain | Business Casual | Collared shirts, sweaters, dark trousers/skirts |
