There have been more and more posts about children’s education on the forum lately, especially regarding the choice of international schools. Having recently moved to Spain, I went through the process of finding a suitable British school for my child. I’ve scoured all the relevant official websites, ran into some dead ends, but also learned a lot. Today, I’m sharing my experience, hoping it can help other parents with the same needs.
At first, I was completely overwhelmed. Searching “colegio británico” on Google gave me all sorts of results—some were agencies, others were ranking lists, and the information was very disorganized. I later found that starting directly with the official websites of authoritative organizations is much more efficient. These sites not only provide accurate information but are also clearly categorized, saving a huge amount of time on filtering.

Key Official Website Recommendations
The following websites are the ones I found most useful. They cover most of the mainstream British international schools in Spain. I recommend bookmarking them and going through them one by one.
NABSS
This is arguably the most authoritative one: the National Association of British Schools in Spain. Schools listed here are all accredited by the British Department for Education, so their teaching quality is guaranteed. On the website, you can search directly by region, and each school has its own page detailing its curriculum, fee range, student numbers, etc., which is very straightforward. I used NABSS to first shortlist several schools around Madrid and then delved into each school’s own website for more details.
CIS
CIS is a global accreditation body for international schools with very high standards. If a school is accredited by both NABSS and CIS, it’s basically top-tier. The CIS website can also be used to find schools. While it’s not as focused on “British” schools as NABSS, it covers a broader range of school types. If you’re not exclusively considering a purely British education and are also interested in options like the IB curriculum, this site is very valuable. My personal impression is that CIS-accredited schools generally tend to be better in terms of facilities and internationalization.
School Comparison Summary
To help you understand the characteristics of schools under different accreditation systems, I’ve made a simple comparison table. This is based on my personal observations and may not be perfectly accurate, but it can serve as a reference.
| Characteristic | NABSS Accredited Schools | CIS Accredited Schools |
| Core Curriculum | Strictly follows the British National Curriculum | Diverse; often features the IB curriculum, but can also include British/American curricula |
| Student Body | Higher proportion of British and local students | More diverse international student body, a true ‘mini-United Nations’ |
| Teaching Style | Traditional and rigorous British elite education style | Focuses on holistic education, emphasizing cross-cultural communication and inquiry-based learning |
| Focus Your Search If… | You prioritize this if the goal is for your child to attend university in the UK. | You should focus on these if you want your child to gain a broader international perspective through British international schools. |
Finding a school is hard work and an information battle. First, use these authoritative organization websites for an initial screening to identify a few candidates. Then, dive deep into each school’s own website to research their British school tuition fees, and finally, schedule school visits. Following this process, you’re unlikely to go wrong. I hope my experience can help everyone. I also welcome other experienced parents to add their tips below! Wishing all your kids get into Oxford and Cambridge Haha, just kidding. The most important thing is to find the best fit for your child!
