I’ve been researching schools for my child recently, and it’s been truly overwhelming! I’m sure many fellow parents in Spain feel the same way, constantly worrying about our children’s education. Many of us place a high value on education and always want the best for our kids. International schools naturally become the top choice, as their curricula are globally recognized, giving students an advantage when applying to universities in Europe or the US.
Coincidentally, both El Mundo newspaper and Forbes magazine have just released their latest rankings of international schools in Spain. I’ve taken the time to compile some of the key information to share with everyone, hoping it can help other parents in the school selection process. These rankings are quite valuable as they consider many factors, including the school’s educational model, facilities, faculty, reputation, and IB/A-Level results.
Overview of Top International Schools
The rankings change slightly each year, but a few schools are always perennial top performers. These institutions are typically concentrated in the major regions of Madrid and Barcelona, where resources are more abundant. For example, Runnymede College and The English Montessori School in Madrid, as well as Benjamin Franklin International School and American School of Barcelona in Barcelona, are prestigious schools that consistently feature on these lists.

The application process and tuition for these top schools are also ‘top-tier,’ and it’s common for spots to be highly sought after. Annual fees can range from approximately €10,000 to over €20,000 depending on the grade level, not including additional costs like registration fees, meals, and school transportation. Therefore, besides checking the rankings for Spanish international schools, we also need to consider our family’s financial situation and our child’s individual needs.
A Look at Curricula and Tuition at Some Top Schools
To give you a clearer picture, I’ve created a simple table listing key information for some of the most frequently asked-about schools. Please note that the tuition fees are just approximate ranges; you should always check the school’s official website for the latest figures!

Choosing a school is a long process, and looking at rankings alone is definitely not enough. I highly recommend that once you have a shortlist of target schools, you book a Campus Tour. Visit in person to get a feel for the atmosphere, talk with the admissions officers, and see if the school’s philosophy aligns with your own. I hope we can all find the perfect school for our children! If you know of other great schools, feel free to share them in the discussion below!
