I’ve been so overwhelmed lately with choosing a school for my child. Our family just moved to Madrid not long ago, and we’re currently looking into the international schools here. The biggest dilemma we’re facing is whether to choose a school with a strong focus on French or one that emphasizes Spanish.
Neither my husband nor I are native Spanish speakers, but since we plan to live in Spain long-term, we definitely want our child to learn Spanish to a native level. On the other hand, we also feel that mastering a major language like French would be a huge advantage for their future. After visiting a few schools, my thoughts are getting more and more jumbled. I’d love to hear the experiences and advice from other parents on this forum.

First Impressions from School Visits
We’ve been focusing on a few popular schools in Madrid, mainly the Lycée Français de Madrid and some schools that offer the IB curriculum with an emphasis on Spanish, such as SEK or King’s College. It feels like their educational philosophies and focuses are quite different.
Lycée Français de Madrid
LFM is very well-known, and its system seems incredibly established, completely following the French national curriculum. The upside is that the quality of French instruction is undeniable, and they have campuses worldwide, which makes transferring easier if we ever move again. However, we’re a bit worried that in such an environment, our child’s Spanish might become marginalized. Although the school does teach Spanish, it’s not the primary language of instruction. Are there any parents here whose children attend LFM? Could you share how your children’s Spanish proficiency is and how they’ve integrated into local social circles?
Local Spanish International Schools
These schools typically use the IB curriculum and place a strong emphasis on both Spanish and English. Their advantage is that they allow children to better integrate into the local Spanish culture, and Spanish proficiency is definitely a strong point. In comparison, however, French might only be offered as an elective foreign language, unlike in dedicated Spanish French international schools, and the depth and breadth would certainly not match that of LFM. It really feels like you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Below is a simple comparison I’ve put together based on our initial research. It might not be entirely accurate, so please feel free to correct me:
| Feature | Lycée Français de Madrid | SEK / King’s College |
| Primary Language of Instruction | French | Spanish, English |
| Curriculum | French National Curriculum | International Baccalaureate (IB) |
| Cultural Integration | Leans towards French culture | Closer to local Spanish culture |
| University Pathways | Advantage for French university applications | Global universities, especially in the UK, US, and Spain |
Our thinking is that our child won’t necessarily end up in France in the future, but we’re also not sure if we’ll stay in Spain forever. Therefore, choosing a more universally applicable educational path seems like a safer bet. I’m truly torn and would love to know how other parents made their decisions. Is there anything we might have overlooked? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated
