Lately, I’ve been looking at schools for my child here in Barcelona, and honestly, it’s been overwhelming. There are quite a few international schools to choose from, each with its own characteristics and focus. My recent deep dive has been into Sunshine International School of Barcelona. Since there isn’t much discussion about it online, I decided to compile my research from the past few weeks. I also welcome any neighbors with experience to add their insights and join the discussion.
General School Information
The school is located in Barcelona, specifically in Gavà, which is also not far from Castelldefels—a very nice area environmentally. It’s an international school offering a K-12 education, from kindergarten through high school, with a fully English-taught environment. What particularly caught my attention is that, in addition to English, they require all students to learn Spanish and Catalan. For families who want their children to integrate into the local culture without sacrificing an English-speaking environment, this seems like a great balance.

Curriculum and Features
The school’s core curriculum is based on the British National Curriculum, and it offers the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) in the high school years. This combination is quite common in international schools, and the value of the IB is well-known, providing a significant advantage for university applications worldwide. I particularly appreciate their emphasis on “personalized learning”. They have small class sizes, and I’ve heard the number of students per class is well-controlled, allowing teachers to give individual attention to each student. Beyond academics, the school also places a strong emphasis on sports and the arts, offering many extracurricular options like football, basketball, drama, and music to ensure a well-rounded development for the children.
A Brief Overview of the Application Process
From what I’ve gathered about the application process, it generally involves submitting standard documents online, such as the application form, the child’s school reports, and a copy of their passport. Afterward, the school schedules an assessment. For younger children, this might be an observation and a simple interview, while older students will have written tests and an interview. The main purpose is to evaluate the child’s English proficiency and academic ability to ensure they can keep up. The process feels quite formal, unlike some schools where admission seems to be guaranteed with payment. Below is a simple overview of the fees I’ve put together. Keep in mind that the specific numbers may vary, so please use this as a reference. I also came across a post about Sunshine International School job openings which might be of interest.
| Grade Level | Registration Fee | Tuition Fee |
| Preschool | Approx. €1,000 | Approx. €8,000 - €9,000 |
| Primary | Approx. €1,000 | Approx. €10,000 - €12,000 |
| Secondary | Approx. €1,000 | Approx. €13,000 - €15,000 |
My impression of Sunshine International School of Barcelona is quite positive. The facilities look very new, and the curriculum seems well-established. However, the tuition is definitely not cheap, placing it in the mid-to-high-end range for international schools. Also, I’ve heard that the proportion of international students is high, which should make for a more immersive language environment. Are there any parents here whose children attend this school? Or any neighbors who have toured it? I’d love to hear your real experiences! Thanks in advance everyone!
