I’ve been renting in Madrid for a few years since moving to Spain, and watching the rent prices shoot up has recently made me think about buying a place. However, property prices in Madrid and Barcelona are prohibitively high, and the financial pressure is quite overwhelming. So, I wanted to start this thread to discuss with everyone: besides these two major cities, where else in Spain can you find more affordable housing and a good quality of life? I’m hoping to get the ball rolling and hear some great suggestions from you all.
I’ve done a bit of research myself and a few cities seem particularly noteworthy. First on the list is Valencia . As Spain’s third-largest city, Valencia has been gaining popularity in recent years. It has a great climate, beautiful beaches, and a vibrant city atmosphere. Although prices are rising, they are still a ‘bargain’ compared to Madrid. With the same budget, you can afford a larger and better-located property in Valencia. Plus, the cost of living is relatively lower, making it ideal for those who prioritize a quality lifestyle.

Heading further south, several cities in the Andalusia region are also very attractive. For example, Seville and Malaga . As the capital of the region, Seville is rich in cultural heritage and is a stunningly beautiful city, though the summer heat can be extreme. Malaga, of course, is the jewel of the Costa del Sol. Its pleasant climate makes it a favorite among Northern European retirees, so properties by the sea aren’t cheap anymore. However, if you look a bit more inland, you can still find some good deals. I’ve heard that property prices in Granada are even lower, but job opportunities might not be as plentiful as in cities with affordable properties in Spain.
Besides these popular coastal or southern cities, I’ve also noticed some inland cities, like Zaragoza , the capital of the Aragon region. It’s conveniently located right between Madrid and Barcelona, with the AVE high-speed train connecting to both in about half an hour. It’s a sizable city with all the necessary amenities, but the property prices and cost of living are much lower. It feels like an undervalued gem that many people overlook. It might not appeal to those who love the hustle, bustle, and beaches, but for someone looking for a stable and quiet life, or for low-cost properties in Spain, it’s a very practical option.
I’ve put together a simple table with reference prices for a few cities. The data is based on average prices found online, so it’s not exact, but it should provide a quick comparison. Feel free to add to it, discuss, or share your own real experiences with house hunting and buying in these cities!
