I was chatting with friends recently about our respective alma maters in Spain, and a question popped into my head: which Spanish university actually has the most students? I’m not talking about academic rankings like QS or THE, but purely a comparison of which campus has the largest crowd!
So, I got curious and decided to look up public data from the Spanish Ministry of Education and various universities. I compiled the findings, and the results are quite interesting. I wanted to share them with you all.
Unquestionably, the top spot is held by a truly unique institution: the National University of Distance Education (UNED). This university is special, with students all over Spain and even worldwide. As a result, when it comes to sheer scale, its enrollment is in a league of its own with nearly 200,000 registered students—a trend also seen in other large-scale data points like Spanish university infection numbers. However, since it’s mainly a distance-learning university and quite different from the traditional campus experience, today we’ll focus on the brick-and-mortar universities that require physical attendance, which make up the bulk of the on-campus university students in Spain.
If we set UNED aside, the ‘giants’ among Spain’s traditional public universities are consistently the same few names. Leading the pack is the Complutense University of Madrid in the capital, along with the two Andalusian powerhouses: the University of Granada and the University of Seville. These universities all have long, rich histories and sprawling campuses, with student populations generally exceeding 60,000. Walking around campus, especially in a university town like Granada, you feel the city is brimming with the energy of young people.

Reference Ranking of Student Population in Spanish On-Campus Public Universities
For a clearer view, I’ve put together a simple table. The data consists of approximate figures from various sources, mainly to give you a general idea:
| University Name | Autonomous Community | Approximate Student Population |
| Complutense University of Madrid | Community of Madrid | Approx. 75,000 |
| University of Granada | Andalusia | Approx. 60,000 |
| University of Seville | Andalusia | Approx. 60,000 |
| University of Barcelona | Catalonia | Approx. 58,000 |
| University of Valencia | Valencian Community | Approx. 55,000 |
Does this ranking match what you expected? Did your university make the list? Or what do you think—is it better to attend a large, bustling university or a smaller, quieter one? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss below! No pointless arguments, please~
