I’ve just recently arrived in Spain and started looking for a place in Madrid, and honestly, it’s been a real headache. Back in my home country, if I wanted to find a flat in my hometown, I could just go to a local property website, and all the information was clear and easy to find. But here in Spain, I feel completely lost and don’t even know where to start. The language barrier is also a significant hurdle.
A friend mentioned a few websites, but I still find them a bit confusing to use. I’d like to ask the experienced folks on this forum: are there any reliable, centralized websites or apps for house hunting in Spain, similar to the property portals back home? Ideally, I’m looking for a platform with plenty of listings, frequent updates, and accurate information. I want something where I can filter by area, price, and flat type, and see clear photos and the landlord’s contact details.
After some research and with a few tips from friends, I’ve mainly been trying out the two platforms below. They seem to be the most popular tools for finding property in Spain right now. I want to share my initial impressions with others who are also in the process of house hunting:

My Experience with Mainstream Property Platforms
Idealista
You could call this the ‘Zillow’ or ‘Rightmove’ of Spain. It has the widest coverage, with a huge number of listings for renting and buying, from both private owners and agencies. The interface is very intuitive, and I love the map search feature! You can just draw a circle on the map to see all the available properties within that area. The downside is that because it’s so popular, good flats get snapped up incredibly quickly. Also, I’ve found that some information on Spanish property websites isn’t always up-to-date, and you might not get a reply from landlords or agents for a while after sending a message.
Fotocasa
This one is quite similar to Idealista and is also a massive platform. I feel its interface design is a bit more modern, and the photo quality is generally higher. Sometimes, when I can’t find anything suitable on Idealista, browsing Fotocasa can lead to some hidden gems. The two platforms complement each other well, so I’d recommend having both apps and checking them simultaneously when you’re searching.
For a more direct comparison, I’ve made a simple table summarizing my personal experience with these two platforms. Of course, this is just my opinion, and I welcome any additions or corrections.
| Feature | Idealista | Fotocasa |
| Number of Listings | Huge number, nationwide coverage | Very large, slightly fewer than Idealista |
| User Interface | Intuitive, powerful map search | Modern, higher photo quality |
| Property Types | Rent, buy, share, commercial - all included | Mainly rent/buy, but also very comprehensive |
| Update Speed | Extremely fast, but good places go in seconds | Fast, you can sometimes find good deals |
| Personal Recommendation | First choice, a must-have app | Use as a complement to other Spanish property websites for cross-referencing |
So, while there isn’t a direct equivalent of a hyper-local site like the ones from my hometown, Idealista and Fotocasa should cover most of our house-hunting needs. I hope this post helps other newcomers to Spain who are stressed about finding a place! Please feel free to reply below and share your own go-to tools and tips on what to avoid!
