I’ve been researching private universities in Madrid lately and took a closer look at Alfonso X el Sabio University, or UAX for short. Information seems a bit scattered, so I’ve compiled my findings to start a discussion. Current students and alumni, please feel free to chime in and share your experiences!
One of the most appealing aspects of UAX for me is its campus environment. The main campus is in Villanueva de la Cañada, about 30 km from Madrid’s city center, located in a quiet university town. The environment is fantastic, with plenty of green space and modern facilities. While the commute might take some time, for students who want a peaceful place to focus on their studies, this could actually be an advantage. Here’s a campus photo to give you an idea.

Analysis of Top Programs
When talking about UAX, you have to mention its flagship programs, especially in the field of Health Sciences. I initially thought all private universities were more or less the same, but I quickly realized that’s not the case at all. UAX’s reputation and investment in facilities for certain programs are truly top-notch.
Overview of Popular Programs
I’ve briefly summarized a few of the most frequently asked-about programs with some of my personal thoughts:
| Program | Features | Best Suited For |
| Dentistry | UAX’s star program, with its own dental hospital providing extensive practical opportunities. | Those with a clear goal of becoming a dentist and a sufficient budget. |
| Veterinary Medicine | Also a top-tier program, featuring a large veterinary hospital with advanced equipment. | Animal lovers with strong practical skills who can handle an intensive curriculum. |
| Physiotherapy | Highly recognized in Spain with good employment prospects. | Students interested in sports rehabilitation and human sciences. |
When considering a well-known private university like this, and others such as the University of Derby in Spain, tuition is a major concern. At UAX, the fees are indeed not cheap, especially for the top programs mentioned above. Annual tuition is typically between €15,000 and €20,000, or even higher. Therefore, it’s crucial to have a clear financial plan before applying. On the plus side, living costs in Villanueva are lower than in the city center, which helps to balance things out.
I think UAX is a university with very distinct characteristics. If your goal is a specific program in the Health Sciences field and you have an adequate budget, it is definitely a choice worth considering. However, if you’re just looking to study business or humanities, there are probably more cost-effective options available. You might find other universities or different programs, like the University of Derby in Spain programs, to be a better fit. What does everyone think? Are there any current students or graduates who can share their real-life experiences? Let’s discuss!
