Recently, many newcomers on the forums have been asking about schooling for their children, especially about the costs of private primary schools. The information out there seems chaotic, with all sorts of different claims. My eldest is in the second year of a decent private primary school in Madrid, so I’ll use my own experience and that of friends to break down the costs for you. Hopefully, this will help parents who are currently making a decision.
Cost Breakdown: More Than Just Tuition
Don’t just focus on the enseñanza (tuition) line item; that’s just the tip of the iceberg! The cost of a private school is usually a ‘package deal’ that mainly includes the following:
- Tuition (Enseñanza): This is the most fundamental part. Depending on the school’s prestige and location, it can range from €300 to over €1,000 per month. Ours is mid-range, at around €500.
- Dining (Comedor): This is almost always mandatory unless you live right next to the school and can pick up your child for lunch. The cost is typically between €120 and €180 per month, with significant differences in meal quality.
- School Bus (Ruta): If you live far from the school, the bus is a necessity. This is another significant expense, calculated by distance, with monthly fees of €100-€200 being very common.
- Academic/Material Fees: These are either charged as a lump sum at the beginning of the school year or spread out over the monthly payments. They cover things like books, stationery, and photocopying fees, which are an integral part of Spanish private school costs. This amounts to about €300-€500 per year.
- Uniforms: This is a one-time investment, but kids grow fast, and
their pants will be too short before you know it. Therefore, you’ll need to buy new items almost every year. For a full set, expect to spend around €400-€600 initially, a key component of the overall Spanish private school costs.

Regional Differences: Madrid vs. Barcelona vs. Other Areas
Location has a huge impact on cost. As the two largest cities, Madrid and Barcelona have the highest concentration of private education resources, and naturally, the highest prices. For some top-tier British or American international schools, an annual total cost of €20,000 for the primary stage is quite normal. However, in cities like Valencia, Seville, or Malaga, you can find good quality private schools where the overall private school fees might be 20%-30% lower than in Madrid. So, when choosing a school, you might also want to consider the city’s cost of living.
I’ve put together a rough guide to give you a quick reference:
| Region | Standard Private | International School |
| Madrid/Barcelona | €700 - €1200 /month | €1200 - €2000+ /month |
| Valencia/Andalusia, etc. | €500 - €900 /month | €900 - €1500 /month |
Don’t Forget the “Hidden” Costs
Besides the regular items mentioned above, don’t overlook other miscellaneous expenses. These include short school trips, extracurricular activities like swimming, piano, or robotics, and summer camps at the end of the school year. All told, you should budget an extra thousand euros or so per year for these. Honestly, raising a child is a process of continuous investment, so keep your wallet ready…
Choosing private education in Spain means you should be prepared for an annual budget of at least €8,000 to €15,000. Of course, despite the expense, seeing your child happy at school, speaking both Spanish and English fluently, and making friends from all over the world makes it a worthwhile investment.
