Lately, I’ve seen many people on forums discussing their children’s schooling, especially how to choose an international school. My own kid is approaching school age, so I’ve spent a lot of time researching the American private school system in Spain. Today, I’m sharing the information I’ve gathered, hoping it can help other families facing the same challenge!
Compared to British schools, American schools seem to place a greater emphasis on student individuality and creativity, and their curriculum is more flexible. Most of them follow the American High School Diploma system, and many also offer the IB (International Baccalaureate) program as an option for their American schools in Spain. This provides students with a wide range of university options later on, whether they plan to study in the U.S. or elsewhere.

A Rundown of Popular American Schools
American schools in Spain are mainly concentrated in the two major cities, Madrid and Barcelona. Of course, other regions like Valencia and Malaga also have excellent options. I’ve primarily focused on the ones in Madrid and Barcelona, as they are the top choices for most families.
Madrid Area
As the capital, Madrid’s educational resources are truly top-notch. A few of the top American schools consistently dominate the rankings, and competition for admission is quite fierce.
- The American School of Madrid : An absolute star school with a long history and first-class facilities. The campus is huge, and the infrastructure is excellent. The curriculum covers everything from kindergarten to high school, with a strong academic focus. As you’d expect, the tuition is top-tier, and getting in isn’t easy.
- International College of Spain : Although its name doesn’t include ‘American,’ it is a genuinely American-style school that offers the full IB program and is highly international.
Barcelona Area
Barcelona also has a strong international atmosphere, and its American schools are equally popular choices.
- The American School of Barcelona : On par with ASM in Madrid, this is the flagship American school in the Barcelona area. It places a strong emphasis on technology and innovative education. Its graduates have excellent prospects, with many gaining admission to top U.S. universities.
- Benjamin Franklin International School : This school is known for its wonderful community atmosphere and strong parent-school partnership. In addition to the American diploma, it also offers the IB diploma. It has a great reputation among parents in Barcelona.
I’ve put together a simple comparison table. The data is compiled from the schools’ official websites and various education forums, so there might be some discrepancies. Please use it for reference only
! Tuition fees typically vary by grade level; the figures here represent a general mid-range estimate.
| School Name | City | Approx. Annual Tuition | Core Curriculum |

Choosing a school is a major undertaking. Rankings and tuition are just one part of the equation; the most important thing is finding a school whose philosophy and atmosphere are the right fit for your child. I highly recommend attending a school’s Open Day if you can, to get a feel for it in person. Feel free to add your own insights or join the discussion!
