Having recently moved to Spain, I’ve been eager to find a place to learn to dance, especially passionate styles like Salsa or Bachata. After asking around, I found that in-person classes either didn’t fit my schedule or were taught entirely in Spanish. For someone like me, still struggling at a B1 level, it felt pretty overwhelming. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up or understand the instructions.
Then, I had a bright idea: why not try learning on YouTube? It’s free, and no one will laugh if I mess up, haha. I did a quick search and it was like opening a whole new world! There are countless dance videos taught by native Spanish speakers, and the quality for learning Spanish on your own is incredibly high, with many designed specifically for absolute beginners.

My Beginner’s Self-Study Experience
Initially, I focused on videos teaching basic steps. The instructors usually break down the movements in great detail, speak slowly, and use mirror-image teaching, which makes it stress-free to follow along. Even if I didn’t understand every word, I could get the hang of it just by mimicking the actions. I discovered a handy trick: you can set the video playback speed to 0.75x to see the moves more clearly. After a week or two of practice, I started to get a feel for the basic steps and body rhythm. Now, whenever I hear the music, my feet just want to start moving, and my confidence has soared!
Recommended Channels and Keywords
To make it easier for you, I’ve compiled a few of my favorite channels and some search keywords. Just copy and paste them into the YouTube search bar. These instructors explain things very clearly, and for those who are self-studying Spanish, you’ll notice they each have a distinct personal style, so you can choose based on your preference.
| Dance Type | Recommended YouTube Channel | Recommended Search Keywords |
| Salsa | Adrian y Anita | pasos básicos de salsa solo |
| Bachata | Korke y Judith | bachata para principiantes |
| Flamenco | Escuela de Flamenco de Andalucía | cómo aprender a bailar flamenco en casa |
Finally, I want to say that dancing is an incredibly fun and stress-relieving activity! It’s not only great exercise but also a wonderful way to immerse yourself in Spanish culture. If, like me, you’ve been wanting to learn to dance but are a bit hesitant—especially if you’re still working on your Spanish pronunciation—why not start tonight? Just open YouTube and follow a video. Who knows, maybe we’ll be dancing together at the next fiesta! ¡A bailar
