Having recently moved to Spain, I started the challenging journey of teaching myself Spanish to better integrate into local life. After some trial and error, I’ve discovered some real gems among the textbooks available. I’m starting this thread to share them with fellow learners and hope it helps. I also welcome any experts to add their own recommendations!
It was overwhelming at first. There are so many books on the market—Aula, Sueña, Prisma… the variety of series is dizzying. Based on recommendations from language school teachers and my own impressions from flipping through them, I’ve primarily used the following books, and they’ve all been quite good.

For DELE Prep and Overall Improvement
If your specific goal is to earn a DELE certificate, then a dedicated prep series is essential. These Spanish textbooks are highly focused and help you quickly get accustomed to the exam format and timing.
El Cronómetro & Las Claves del DELE
These two series are arguably the classics for DELE preparation. El Cronómetro is fast-paced, and the difficulty of its questions closely mirrors the actual exam, making it perfect for a final sprint before the test. On the other hand, Las Claves del DELE focuses more on explanations, breaking down concepts and test-taking strategies for you, which is excellent for building a solid foundation. When I prepared for the B2 exam, I first went through all the question types with Las Claves and then used Cronómetro for intensive practice and mock exams. The result was fantastic.
For Daily Communication and Systematic Learning
If your goal for self-studying Spanish isn’t just about passing an exam but rather improving your daily communication skills and systematically learning grammar and vocabulary, then a general-purpose textbook series will be more suitable.
| Textbook Series | Best For | Features |
| Aula Internacional | Beginner to C1 | Topics are very practical and modern, visually rich, and great for classroom interaction. |
| Sueña | Beginner to B2 | Clear grammar explanations, solid workbook exercises, well-suited for self-study. |
| Prisma | Beginner to C2 | Comprehensive content for balanced development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, but with a slightly more traditional style. |
Personally, I recommend the Aula series the most. It has a modern layout and its content is very current, covering topics like social media and environmentalism, which keeps it from being boring. The only downside to this Spanish textbook might be that the grammar explanations are not centralized, so you need to consolidate them yourself. I’ve used the A2 book from the Sueña series and found its grammar section to be exceptionally well-organized and easy to understand; Highly recommended for students who struggle with grammar. As for Prisma, it feels more like a traditional school textbook, a bit conventional.
Choosing a textbook is like choosing a pair of shoes: there’s no single ‘best’ one, only the one that fits you best. I suggest heading to a bookstore or library to flip through them, get a feel for the different styles, and then decide which series to buy. I hope my sharing has been helpful, and I’d love to hear what textbooks you’re using. Let’s exchange tips and experiences!
