I just moved to Spain not long ago. Although I learned some basics back home, I’ve realized it’s far from enough now that I’m here! My listening and speaking skills are really lacking, especially in places like supermarkets and banks, which can be incredibly frustrating. I have a lot of downtime outside of work/school, so I’m looking for some reliable apps to practice and reinforce my Spanish on the go.
I’ve heard a lot about Duolingo, with its very recognizable green owl logo. I tried it out and found its gamified, level-based approach quite engaging and less boring, which is great for memorizing vocabulary and basic sentence structures. But does it feel a bit too basic? The speaking and listening practice seems a bit weak. I wonder what the long-term results are like. Has anyone stuck with it consistently?

Some friends have also recommended Babbel, saying it’s more structured. Its lessons are designed more like traditional textbooks, explaining grammar points and including many exercises based on real-life conversation scenarios. It sounds like it might be more helpful for improving practical communication skills. However, it’s a paid service, and the price isn’t exactly cheap. For those who’ve used it, is a Babbel subscription worth it? Is there a significant improvement in effectiveness compared to free apps?
Besides these two, I’ve also heard of Memrise. It seems to focus on using flashcards and videos to learn words and phrases, especially with lots of short clips from native speakers, which seems great for picking up authentic pronunciation and usage. I’ve also seen other apps that specialize in listening practice or verb conjugations. The options are so varied, I’m getting analysis paralysis. So many choices, it’s overwhelming.
To make comparison easier, I’ve put together a simple summary of the features of a few Spanish learning apps I know about. This might not be completely accurate, so I welcome corrections and additions from anyone who has used them!
Main Spanish Learning App Comparison
| App Name | Key Features | Best For |
| Duolingo | Gamified learning, beginner-friendly, spaced repetition | Absolute beginners, memorizing vocabulary in spare moments |
| Babbel | Systematic lessons, focus on grammar and conversation scenarios | Learners who want a structured course and have a budget |
| Memrise | Real native speaker videos, uses memory science, authentic materials | Users looking to improve listening and learn authentic expressions |
So, when it comes to self-study Spanish apps, I wanted to start this thread to ask all the experienced expats and fellow learners in Spain: what apps are you using to learn Spanish? Do you have any hidden gem apps to recommend? I’m looking for real user experiences! For example, which app has the best speaking practice feature? Are there any that are particularly helpful for preparing for the DELE exam? Let’s discuss and help each other out to achieve language fluency sooner! ¡Gracias
