I’ve been living in Spain for a while now, and while immersion is crucial, I’ve found that you can’t replace systematic learning with good textbooks. When I first started, I took a lot of wrong turns, buying books that weren’t suitable for self-study—either too dry or too disorganized. While tidying up my bookshelf recently, I decided to share a few of the ‘heroes’ that have been incredibly helpful to me. I hope this can help those who are self-studying or planning to start learning Spanish.
All-in-One Textbooks
“Nuevo Prisma”
This series is a personal favorite, offering a complete curriculum from A1 to C2. Its biggest strength is the excellent contextualized teaching. Each unit is built around a real-life theme, like renting an apartment, visiting a doctor, or traveling, making it extremely practical. The exercises are also varied, covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing, without ever feeling tedious. Although it’s entirely in Spanish, even from the A1 level, it’s not difficult to understand thanks to the illustrations and clear layout. Personally, I find it more ‘authentic’ than many bilingual textbooks from my home country, helping to cultivate a Spanish way of thinking much faster.

Specialized Grammar Books
“Gramática de uso del español”
This grammar book is hailed by many as the ‘bible’ of Spanish grammar, and it truly lives up to its reputation! Its format is brilliant: grammar points are explained on the left page with corresponding exercises on the right. The explanations are concise, getting straight to the point with authentic example sentences. Most importantly, it cleared up many grammar puzzles I encountered in daily conversations where I knew what to say but not why. For instance, the differences between ser and estar, the uses of por and para, and the subjunctive mood—all these tricky points are explained with great clarity in this book. I highly recommend having a copy to reference anytime; it’s incredibly effective and a great resource to have among your Spanish textbooks.
Vocabulary and Exam Prep
When it comes to memorizing vocabulary, I have to complain about those vocabulary books that just list words out of context—they’re so inefficient! Then I discovered the official DELE exam preparation vocabulary books, like the vocabulary sections in the “Preparación al DELE” series by Edelsa, which was a game-changer. These books categorize vocabulary by theme and provide numerous collocations and example sentences, allowing you to learn words in context. It’s an excellent way to self-study Spanish. Even if you’re not preparing for the exam, they are fantastic for expanding your thematic vocabulary.
