Just moved to Spain, or planning to? Are you stressing over the language barrier? Classes can be expensive and inflexible, and it’s hard to know where to start with self-study. Don’t worry! Today, I’m sharing some amazing free apps I’ve been using to learn Spanish. They’re personally tested and effective, and I hope they can help you too!
For Absolute Beginners: Duolingo
When it comes to language learning apps, Duolingo is a must-mention. Its gamified approach is incredibly addictive; you learn tons of words and sentence patterns without even realizing it, just by clearing levels like in a game. Most importantly, its pronunciation is very standard, which is extremely helpful for beginners to build correct pronunciation habits. While some may find it a bit childish, as an introductory tool for ear training and memorizing basic vocabulary, it’s definitely the top choice.

For All-Around Improvement: Memrise
If Duolingo is the ‘teacher’ that gets you started with learning Spanish on your own, then Memrise is like a vast library of language resources. It features tons of short videos recorded by native Spanish speakers, allowing you to hear the most authentic accents and daily expressions—this is a fantastic feature! In addition to the official courses for learning Spanish on your own, there are numerous user-created vocabulary courses covering a wide range of topics, from daily life to DELE exam vocabulary. I especially love using it to memorize words; combining videos with example sentences really doubles the learning effect.
For Advanced Study & Exam Prep: SpanishDict
This app is actually more like a powerful digital dictionary. But it does much more than just look up words! I highly recommend its verb conjugation tool
! The struggle of learning Spanish verbs is real! With this tool, even the most complex tenses and conjugations become crystal clear. It also offers a word of the day, grammar explanations, and plenty of example sentences, making it perfect for learners with some basic knowledge who want to refine their skills and fill in the gaps. For those preparing for the DELE exam, this app is an absolute must-have.
A Quick Comparison
To give you a clearer idea of these free Spanish courses
, I’ve made a simple comparison table:
| App Name | Key Features | Best For |
| Duolingo | Gamified learning, beginner-friendly | Absolute beginners, entry level |
| Memrise | Real-life videos, huge vocabulary database | All levels, especially for improving listening and vocabulary |
| SpanishDict | Powerful dictionary, verb conjugation tool | Intermediate to advanced learners, exam candidates |
There are many other apps on the market, like Babbel, Busuu, and more. But I believe mastering these three is more than enough for daily life and most learning needs. The most important thing is to be consistent! ¡Ánimo a todos
! Let’s all keep it up and achieve fluency in Spanish soon! Feel free to share any other apps you find useful in the comments!
