Hey everyone, I’ve been a long-time lurker on this forum and noticed many people discussing how to learn Spanish, especially how to pass the B2 exam. When I first came to Spain, I also started from scratch and managed to self-study my way to passing the DELE B2. Today, I’m sharing my personal experience, hoping it can help those of you on the same journey!
Core Strategy: Ditch Rote Memorization for All-Around Skill Development
When I started learning Spanish, I was like many others, just grinding through grammar books and memorizing vocabulary lists. The result was ‘mute Spanish’—I could read but not speak. At the B2 level, you’ll find that grammar and vocabulary alone are not enough. The most crucial thing is the ability to actually use the language. My core strategy is to treat listening, speaking, reading, and writing as an integrated whole, not separate skills. For instance, if I learned a new subjunctive mood usage today, I would immediately find a relevant podcast to listen to, try to create sentences with that structure, and then write a short paragraph. This way, the knowledge becomes active and connected.

My Self-Study Toolkit
The key to self-study is finding the right resources to avoid detours. Everyone’s learning style is different, but the following are the combinations I’ve personally tested and found to be most effective. Feel free to use them as a reference:
Textbooks and Apps
- Main Textbook: Prisma or Aula Internacional. I personally prefer Aula because its topics are more modern and relevant to daily life. You don’t need to complete every single exercise, but it’s essential to fully understand the listening and reading sections of each unit.
- Grammar: Gramática de Uso del Español. This series is a godsend! It covers everything from A1 to C2, and I’ve practically worn out my B1-B2 copy. The format is very clear, with explanations on the left and exercises on the right.
- - Vocabulary: Anki. This is a spaced repetition software that’s a real game-changer for mastering Spanish B2. Create your own flashcards with new words you encounter and make a habit of reviewing them daily.
Listening and Speaking Resources
Listening and speaking are the tricky parts of B2 and where students really start to differentiate themselves. My method combines ‘extensive listening’ with ‘intensive listening’.
| Resource Type | Recommended Channels | How to Use |
| News | RTVE Noticias, El País | Spend 15 minutes every morning listening to news summaries to get the gist of current events, which is great for DELE B2 prep. |
| Podcasts | Hoy en El País, Entiende Tu Mente | Listen during your commute. Pick an interesting segment and listen to it repeatedly until you understand every word. |
| TV Series | Netflix, Prime Video | Start with Spanish subtitles, then try turning them off later. Imitate the characters’ dialogue to practice intonation. |
| Language Exchange | Tandem, HelloTalk | Find a language partner to chat with 1-2 times a week. Try to use the new words and sentence structures you’ve recently learned. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes—just speak boldly! |
Self-studying Spanish to a B2 level is definitely not an impossible task, especially with the right B2 textbooks, but it requires strong self-discipline and the right methods. The most important thing is to maintain a positive attitude and integrate learning Spanish into your daily life, rather than treating it as a heavy burden. I hope my sharing has given you some inspiration! ¡Mucho ánimo a todos!
