I moved to Spain not long ago, and while I can get by with basic words for shopping and ordering food, I’ve realized my Spanish level is far too low for true integration and deeper conversations. The pace at language schools can be a bit slow, so I’ve decided to buy some textbooks to study at home and also to prepare for a future DELE certificate.
After visiting several bookstores and asking some local friends, I found that there’s a wide variety of Spanish textbook systems, unlike the more limited options I was used to for learning English. Here, I’ve compiled a few books that are highly recommended and that I also found impressive, hoping to provide a reference for fellow self-learners.

DELE Prep & Comprehensive Improvement
If your goal is specifically to pass the DELE exam, you have plenty of choices. These types of books are usually very systematic, covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Aula Internacional Plus Series
This is likely the most mainstream textbook series used in Spanish language schools today, with a complete set from A1 to C1. Its main advantage is its modern, life-oriented content and diverse exercises that keep things interesting. Each unit includes a video that you can access by scanning a QR code, which is excellent for listening comprehension and pronunciation practice. The downside is that the grammar explanations are somewhat scattered, so for effective self-studying Spanish, you might need to consolidate the rules yourself or use a dedicated grammar book. I’m currently using the B1 book from this series and it’s working well for me, a worthwhile choice considering the general Spanish tutoring costs for additional help.
Prisma Fusión Series
Prisma is another classic comprehensive textbook series. Personally, I find Prisma’s grammar structure clearer and its explanations more detailed compared to Aula. If you’re a learner who likes to understand the logic behind grammar rules, you might prefer Prisma. However, its layout and content can feel a bit more traditional, making it slightly less engaging than Aula.
Skill-Specific Books
If you want to target a specific weak area, such as grammar or vocabulary, dedicated workbooks are your best bet. These can be effectively supplemented with other tools like Spanish learning apps. These books are often not tied to a specific level, or are categorized more broadly by difficulty (A/B/C).
| Title | Focus | Why it’s recommended |
| Gramática de uso del español | Grammar | Considered the ‘bible’ of Spanish grammar, it offers detailed explanations on the left page and corresponding exercises on the right. Perfect for systematic study and filling in knowledge gaps. |
| Uso interactivo del vocabulario | Vocabulary | Organizes words by theme and real-life scenarios, supported by numerous exercises. It encourages learning through context rather than rote memorization. |
| Las Claves del DELE | Exam Skills | This book is designed specifically for DELE exam preparation, focusing on analyzing question types and test-taking strategies. A must-have for the final push before the exam. |
There’s no perfect textbook, only the one that’s right for you. I suggest visiting a bookstore to flip through them yourself to get a feel for the layout and content style. Large bookstores like FNAC or Casa del Libro usually have a very comprehensive selection. I hope everyone finds the book that suits them best and makes rapid progress in their Spanish! Feel free to share any other great books you’ve used!
