When I first arrived in Spain, my Spanish was a mess, to put it mildly. Grammar was a particular nightmare; I was constantly bewildered by all the conjugations and tenses. Following the trend, I initially bought the famous ‘Modern Spanish’ (《现代西班牙语》), but for someone like me who prefers a more freestyle learning approach, it felt too academic and dry. I found it hard to stick with it.
Later, on the recommendation of my language school teachers and local friends, I picked up a few different grammar books and discovered a whole new world! It turns out learning grammar doesn’t have to be so painful. Today, I’m sharing a few books that I’ve used and genuinely found effective, hoping to help fellow students struggling in the sea of grammar.
For Beginners and Consolidation
《Uso de la gramática española》

This series is an absolute favorite of mine! It’s divided into three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. I started with the intermediate one. The layout is incredibly clear: grammar explanations on the left page and corresponding exercises on the right. The explanations are concise, and the example sentences are super practical—the kind you can actually use in daily life. You can immediately reinforce what you’ve learned by doing the exercises, which is very satisfying. Unlike some Spanish grammar books that throw a ton of theory at you and leave you confused. If you want to systematically review your grammar, this Spanish grammar book series is a no-brainer!
For Targeted Practice and Improvement
《Gramática de uso del español》
This series is very similar to the Uso series mentioned above, also featuring the classic “explanation on the left, practice on the right” format. It’s often called the “English Grammar in Use of the Spanish world.” Its content is organized in more detail, breaking down each concept thoroughly, and it has a larger volume of exercises. Personally, I feel its explanations are a bit more down-to-earth than Uso’s, especially when it comes to distinguishing between similar words and common grammar points, which it explains very clearly. If there’s a specific Spanish grammar point you’re always getting mixed up, using this book for targeted practice will be highly effective.
Summary and Comparison
To help you choose, I’ve made a simple table comparing the features of these books:
| Book Title | Recommendation | Best For | Features |
| 《Uso de la gramática española》 | ★★★★★ | A1-C1 learners, systematic study | Classic & authoritative, concise explanations, integrated learning & practice |
| 《Gramática de uso del español》 | ★★★★☆ | A1-B2 learners, targeted practice | Detailed explanations, rich examples, plenty of exercises |
| ‘Modern Spanish’ (现代西班牙语) | ★★★☆☆ | Spanish majors in academic settings | Less ideal for self-learners, comprehensive but dry |
Grammar books are just a tool; the most important thing is to listen, speak, and use the language often. Apply what you learn from the books in conversations with your Tutor or when talking to the cashier at the supermarket. Gradually, the grammar will become second nature. I hope my recommendations are helpful, and feel free to share any other “holy grail” textbooks you’ve found useful!
