Having recently moved to Spain, I quickly realized that language is the first major hurdle. While you can get by with gestures at the grocery store, to truly integrate, it’s essential to [self-study Spanish] and learn the language well. I was completely lost at first and made many mistakes. So, I’ve taken the time to compile all the great beginner self-study materials I’ve used, many of which are [free Spanish learning resources]. I’m sharing this guide with fellow beginners to hopefully help you avoid some of the pitfalls I encountered.
Beginner Stage
The goal at this stage is to build a solid foundation, focusing on pronunciation and basic grammar. Don’t skip pronunciation thinking it’s not important; proper pronunciation is crucial for your future listening and speaking skills. The Spanish rolled rr is definitely a challenge, but you can get the hang of it by practicing combinations like ‘tra’ and ‘dra’ or by mimicking the sound of gargling.

Tools and Textbooks I Use
For absolute beginners, I don’t recommend diving straight into dense textbooks. It’s an easy way to get discouraged. Instead, start with some fun and engaging apps to build your intuition and interest in the language.
App Recommendations: Duolingo and Memrise. Both are well-known and their gamified approach is great for memorizing vocabulary and basic sentence structures. Using them in your spare moments can be very effective.
Textbook Choices: The Modern Spanish (《现代西班牙语》) series is a classic in China, but it can be a bit dry. I personally prefer ELE Actual or Nuevo Prisma. Their content is more relevant to real-life situations, making them less of a chore as [Spanish learning materials]. You can look for PDF versions to use along with the audio files.
Essential Online Resources
There are so many free resources online these days, and you should definitely take advantage of them. Bilibili is a treasure trove for language learners, and many creators there have fantastic content.
| Resource Type | Recommended Channel/Creator | Description |
| Comprehensive Lessons | Bilibili: espanolconjuan | Juan is a very passionate teacher. He teaches entirely in Spanish at a slower pace, which is great for listening practice. |
| Pronunciation Correction | Bilibili: 西班牙语学习 | Has many detailed videos specifically for pronunciation and practicing the rolled ‘r’. |
| Culture & Daily Life | YouTube: Easy Spanish | Uses a street interview format, allowing you to hear authentic accents from people of different regions and ages. |
Learning a language is a long journey, and it’s easy to get discouraged at the beginning when progress seems slow. My personal advice is to be consistent and study a little every day. Even just learning 5 new words a day is much better than studying inconsistently. Also, be brave and speak up! Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Most Spanish people are very friendly and happy to correct you. Feel free to add any other useful resources in the comments below. Let’s do this together! ¡Ánimo!
