Hello everyone, I have some free time recently and want to pick up a new language. I’m currently torn between Spanish and French, and it’s driving me crazy. I know there must be a lot of language gurus on this forum, so I wanted to post and ask for your advice.

A bit about my situation: My English is decent enough for daily conversation. I’m mainly learning for personal interest and for future travel, but I don’t have any immediate work or immigration needs. I’ve read online that many people find French elegant but are put off by its grammar and pronunciation. Spanish, on the other hand, seems more passionate and is said to be relatively easier to learn. I’m not sure if this ‘easiness’ is just an illusion, though. After all, perseverance is the hardest part of learning any language.
To make the comparison clearer, I’ve put together a simple summary of French vs. Spanish based on what I’ve gathered. I’m not sure if it’s accurate, so please feel free to take a look and add your thoughts:
| Comparison | Spanish | French |
| Pronunciation | Relatively regular, clear vowels | More complex, with nasal vowels and many silent letters |
| Grammar Difficulty | Complex verb conjugations, but tenses are relatively straightforward | Verb conjugations are also complex, nouns have gender |
| Global Reach | Official language in 20 countries, widely spoken in the Americas | Official language in 29 countries, widely spoken in Africa and Canada |
| Learning Resources | Seems to have more pop culture resources | Rich in classic arts resources like literature and film |
My Main Concerns
1. For a complete beginner, which language is easier to build confidence with?
I’m worried about getting discouraged by the pronunciation or grammar right at the start and giving up halfway. I’ve heard that Spanish pronunciation is more friendly for Asian speakers, is that true?
2. In terms of practicality and future opportunities, which language has the upper hand?
Although it’s just a hobby, it would be great if the language has more practical use. For instance, when traveling in Europe or the Americas, which language covers a wider area, or in which case are locals more willing to communicate with you in their native tongue?
I’m hoping that friends who have studied both languages, especially those who are self-taught, can share their personal experiences and feelings. For example, how did you make your choice? What pitfalls did you encounter during your studies? Or for the masters who know both, could you tell me what you feel are the biggest differences? Any advice would be incredibly valuable to me. Thanks in advance, everyone!
